Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

My daughter is still at the age where we read the books to her, but she loves to pick up books and “read” them to herself. We encourage her to check out books from the library when we go and she almost always “reads” them herself and then asks one of us to read them to her. She is starting to recognize certain words though, so we try to stick with books that have the same words repeated on multiple pages.

I don’t have any kids, but if I did, I would give them some kind of reward for reading like a special day out or something.
Judy
I don’t have to do anything special to make my child read. She already loves it.

I take out a book and we all read together. I think that kids learn from your example.

Getting my children to read in the summer is not too hard since we have been fostering reading all along and we do not watch TV. The best thing is to find a wonderful book to read aloud.. Winnie the pooh, Narnia, Charlottes Web. Reading aloud makes reading on your own more fun!!

My kids don’t have a lot of choice; tv and electronic game time are limited by MOM :) My kids like to read, so it is not a challenge to get them to do so. They also enjoy incentives in the different summer reading programs, like at the library and Barnes&Noble.

We read along right with them! :) Then we draw a picture of the cover on a piece of poster board when we are done and see how much we can fill it up with all the books we have read over summer!
Linda Kish
I would reward him by getting him new books.

Everyone in our family loves to read including the kids. We have books in the car for them to read and we take trips to the library and go to the storytimes at the library and book stores.

One tip that works for my son, summer OR winter, is to get books from the library and tell him to read one chapter. If he doesn’t like it he can stop. He almost never stops!

If we are planning something fun later in the day, before I make sure that we all take some quiet time to sit and hang out and read especially if the weather is nice.

Lots of family reading time, and lots of funny books. We also check out tons of books from the library, and when we find a book we like, we try to find more from that author to read.
