Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!

As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

I’m an e-mail subscriber. I will give my daughter a “treat” at the end of the week if she has read each night before bed. She and I will read together (different books, same area) and she has to tell me about what she has read. I also try to familiarize myself with the plot etc. to make sure the info. she gives me is accurate.

My Little Bit is only four months old so my tip for getting him to read will be reading to him.

My children enjoy reading, but it’s always fun to have them go to bed at their normal bedtime and then allow them to stay up 20-30 minutes longer as long as they are reading something.
Provide books that they are actually interested in!
Give them equivalent extra “bonus” minutes on the computer or electronics the next day if they read at home.

I sign my kids up for the summer reading program at the library. They get weekly prizes (erasers, stickers, cookie certificates, etc.) At the end they get a free book (they get to choose it) plus a certificate for either pizza or another kid friendly food from local or chain eateries.

What I do to get the kids to read during the summer is talk about where they want to go on vacation and what they would like to see and then we scour the local library and bookstores to see what we can find about the places they want to go and the things they want to do. It’s great incentive to get them away from the TV and computer!

I’m a subscriber. At home I would bribe him with more game time, or an additional 5 minutes to stay up before going to bed if he reads. I’ve come to find out however, that there is no prompting required when I take him to the public library. He hurries up the stairs without his baby brother and I, waits for us at the top of the stairs (we take the elevator), then walks directly to the children’s section and just starts browsing and selecting books then sits down on their kid size chairs and starts reading. He will read for as long as we are in the library. By the end of our visit, he would’ve read 3-6 books. That hardly ever happens at home.

First I tell them how great this or that books sounds and that I think they’d enjoy reading it, etc. That is usually enough to at least get them to pick up the book and give it a try.
