We are all about our 3 local splash parks!

My little one loves to go to the spray park when it’s hot out. He can play, run, and splash and still stay cool.

We enjoy our backyard saltwater pool to keep cool. It is safer for the kids( no chemicals) and safer for the environment. We love to have friends over to swim and cookout. We all supply the food and just enjoy each others company. We also let the kids makes tents out of any and everything so that their imaginations can go wild!!! It’s a nice easy cheap way to entertain the kids and us parents too!!! :)

My son just turned 1 a couple weeks ago, so it doesn’t take much to keep him entertained. But we are very lucky to have Grandma next door and she has a pool! As far as chilly snacks go, my son loves his “milkshakes” I just pour some milk and a couple of frozen strawberries into the blender, and he sucks the stuff down.

We love going out in the backyard and playing on the slip-and-slide! You should see my 6’2″ husband plow his way down it! Hilarious!!

one of the best things I did when my children were small was to give them a small pail of water and an old paintbrush and let them “paint” our cedar fence or the sidewalk- they had loads of fun at no cost, the water dried quickly and they could paint, write their names or make designs for as long as they wanted-

I have to say I love, love, love this website!!!!! Thank you for helping me save money to be able to spend more time at home with my boys. I joined both the forum and e-mail. We too love packing a picnic and going to the park. Also our local cinema has free kids movies in the summer with $1 boxes of popcorn – can’t be beat on a hot summer day!!!

My frugal summer fun tips….I try to have themed days and activities. One day will be water fun day. I set up a kiddy pool, sprinklers, fill water guns, and water balloons. We have messy treats that are better enjoyed outdoors and if the kids are a sticky mess they just wash it off while playing. The next week we will do adventure day (otherwise known as camping day). We catch bugs in empty peanut butter jars and talk about our finds. We “hike” around the neighborhood paying close attention to plants, insects, and animals and discussing them. Or I will say, “everyone keep an eye out for any animals!”. The kids will spot a kitty, dog, squirrel, rabbit etc. We will talk about what color it is, whether we think it is soft, if it is bigger than the previous animal spotted….then the next block i will change it to flowers. Later we will lay on beach blankets and try to spot clouds/stars and determine what they look like and of course we finish the adventure/camp with a hot dog roast/smore making fest!
Be creative and you can come up with craft day, farmer day (the kids assisted in me planting my garden and landscape flowers), chef day(the kids wear aprons and helped prepare every meal of the day). We even have cleaner day. The younger kids love feeling big and helping with dusting and sweeping…..even if I do have to redo it!

Fun Fridays, the kids at the beginning of the summer submit their idea of FREE or inexpensive activities they want to do. We gave each child their friday to plan in turn.
The other summer filler: planning our Backpacks for Kids helping others. The kids work from 7-15 planning and raising money and in 7 years have given away over 5000 fully stocked backpacks to kids in homeless shelter, foster care and through schools, non-profits, and bus drivers, and social services. They work hard and learn the value of money, hard work, coupons, deals and caring.

Looks like a great package. My favorite and inexpensive activity with the kids is to take a picnic to the beach. They get lots of exercise and eat healthy snacks all day long.

Our favorite summer activities..
We got this great cooler two summers ago that holds the perfect picnic lunches. It’s a small 12 can cooler but it holds a LOT!…We pack it up with 4 sammiches, 4 bottles of everyones special drink, sides, and plenty of goodies for desserts. We pack it up a couple times a week and head out to various places. We have hit the free day at the local Air Force Museum, the spray ground park, the park just down the street (we marched with the wagon that day!), and various other places. The kids love to help pack up the cooler and go out on “adventures” they are only 3 and 5 but a simple picnic lunch, lots of water, and the freedom of the parks, trails, and free spray ground nearby helps out on long hot desert summer days! On Sunday nights there are free concerts at a local museum and we have packed up our little cooler and chairs and have dinner with a show.
Every Friday night we turn in with a a picnic in the living room. We rent (or borrow from a friend) a family movie or pick an old favorite….make some homemade pizzas, and treat ourselves to sundaes or popcorn for desserts.

The kids like to spray eachother with the hose, but even more fun, they like to use umbrellas while people are spraying them!
