Really, they didn’t expect the large turnout?!?! That’s nuts. I almost think they do it on purpose and then retract it when they reach a certain amount of redemptions. I mean it’s supposed to be valid until 11/15, and it’s barely been 24 hours.

I went this morning and it came up expired but the manager put it through. I came home to double check that it was a valid coupon and read the above. Just to see I checked it out online and it still works but shipping for a $6.99 shirt is $6.25 not such a good deal.

My husband just used the coupon on 2 pairs of pants… at first they (store manager) told him it was for online only. So he left & called me w/the bad news. I pointed out to him the instructions on the bottom to the sales associate to use, so he went back in and they said he had a point. He said it didn’t scan or work entering the numbers manually, so they just overrode it. Now I see all of this trouble posted here. Glad it was used for 2 pairs of clearance pants for $2.08!

I called Sears retail customer service line and told them they lost a customer over this coupon. A company that size either has internal marketing employees or uses an outside agency to advertise it’s sales and coupons. Not one of them thought to mark the coupon for one time use or online only? The customer service line was that it was intended to be an online coupon, yet it had instructions for the cashier and a bar code and was printable from their website. When I pointed that out the CSR said she realized that but that’s what she was being told to tell people. It’s sad they would frustrate consumers in times like these. I can only imagine the countless people who will try to use this over the next month or so, only to figure out they can’t use it after they get to the counter. Sears won’t be seeing me or my wallet in their stores. They CSR offered me a coupon for 10% off. I told her they could keep it because I won’t be back.

Hey nicole, how did you do it?. cuz I called the # u gave, and the representative said I would have to talk to the store manager. They don’t have anything to do with it. It’s up to the retail store if they don’t honor the coupon.

Has anyone used the actual tear out coupon from Seventeen Magazine? I used the printable last night and although they ran it through, it did come up as “expired”. I have to go back that way today and was going to use the magazine coupon. I hope they don’t give me a hassle about that one.

My mom & I went to use our coupons today @ the Florence Mall in KY but they would not except them. So we had them call the manager and he said the coupon was only intended for internet use. Sears had sent out a corporate email to not except them in store. He said they were possibly “fraudulent”?? I did go online to order something w/ it but the shipping was $6.99 for a shirt. The shipping had to be paid out of pocket so nothing from Sears, with this coupon, for me. :(

I’ll agree that this promotion wasn’t well-thought-out on Sears’ part. They could have put tighter controls on distribution, such as requiring registration before being allowed to print one coupon with an individual barcode, or registering to receive one coupon by mail, etc. But, given the rampant abuse, I really can’t get angry at them for yanking the coupon once they realized their error. On other forums I read, folks were bragging about walking away with hundreds of dollars in free merchandise in one day by using 20 separate coupons for 20 separate transactions of clearance stuff. Regardless of how loosely Sears worded their coupon, we all know that’s not right. The purpose was to drive business, not give away the store. So, in the end, if I’m going to be mad at anybody, it’s the folks who abused a loophole in the system and caused the feeding frenzy. Sears had no choice but to stop it the only way they could.

I agree with you there, Christine. However, I do think some of the blame lies with Sears as well. This has happened time and again with their coupons, and they could easily come up with a better solution for distributing the coupons instead of frustrating and disappointing those people that want to use it legitimately.

I was turned away yesterday at my local Sears. I called the customer relations line at 800.549.4505. (when pompted choose option 5) and told them what happened. They offered to mail me a $10.oo gift card. It doesn’t make up for all the cute outfits I missed out on, but it’s a start! Give it a shot.

THEY ARE ACCEPTING THE COUPON FROM THE SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE!!! My friend and I went to jewelry to pay, b/c that cashier looked the most friendly, and I knew we may have problems with it. We both had our coupons in our hand when she sat her clothes down, and the cashier told her “we aren’t accepting thoses coupons right now b/c we have had some difficulty with them” We both said we didn’t want our things, and turned to leave. I then asked if she knew when they might be able to take them, and she didnt know, and said but they are taking the one that come out the magazine, and I did have one!!! So, I got my dress and my friend asked if she could use my coupon too, even though I only had one, since she couldnt use the print out. And she let her. She was nice, so I wasn’t mad about not being able to use the print out.

The manager in Bethlehem PA showed me the actual corporate letter the stores received yesterday…due to “fraud” the coupon was retracted. Yes, there could be a better way of releasing a coupon, but the people who use 14 coupons during one visit (even if it is separate transactions) definitely abused the system. Don’t get me wrong, I printed a couple with the intent of maybe going once per week to find a cute shirt for my daughter, but if the cashier was aiding and abetting multiple purchase, no wonder Sears pulled the coupon. What’s to stop people from using 20 coupons a day until November?

I hate coupon abuse, i.e. taking all the publix booklets, copying coupons that you shouldn’t. However, I question whether this was just a huge oops on someone’s part or a planned act. Couponing is huge right now and how does a retail giant like Sear’s not know that? They have to and after the KFC coupon issue (Oprah) there is no excuse.

My daughter and I decided we would try out luck at at Sears in central CA. We each picked out clearance items totalling slightly over $10. The coupon came up “expired” but after the cashier read the expiration date and saw it was still valid, he called the manager and she said to put it through manually. Guess she didn’t read the corporate memo. I think someone should start a class action law suit against Sears. It wasn’t stopped for coupon “fraud”. The people who were doing 20 seperate transactions were following exactly what the coupon allowed them to do. It was Sears own fault that they did not have the correct protective wording and did not make the coupons for “one time use only with a security code”. Coupon ” fraud” is when you illegally misuse coupons. Smart shoppers just were taking advantage of a good deal (granted some may have been too excessive), there was no FRAUD and everyone that printed that coupon should have a right to use it. I am sure a smart lawyer could build a nice class action law suit against Sears for all the people they wronged with their “deceptive” advertising.

I was actually quoting Sears’ memo…”due to fraudulent usage”-fraud is commonly understood as dishonesty calculated for advantage. Yes, you are right in that the acutal wording was poor on the coupon. But again, to use coupons 20 times while standing at the same cashier seems advantageous. Nobody was being dishonest, but people should use a bit of common sense when it comes to PDF coupons…it was stated earlier that they probably wouldn’t last, and it was proven once again today. I had suggested to someone else that Sears needs to look to Bricks to print their coupons, that way consumers can print up to 2 honestly, and that everybody gets a fair shake. I never got to use my coupon, and I WAS doing it honestly. The hoarders ruined for a lot of people. Like someone posted earlier, if those same people would have used one per week until November, this probably would have gone on the entire run of the coupon. Unfortunately, those people did 20 a day, and would have continued. Those who try to do a class action lawsuit would be no better than the lady who sued McDonalds for $100 million because she got burned by her coffee…”Well, the cup DIDN’T say that the coffee was hot!”….DUH, some things in life require common sense.

Sears stores have put up signs that state they will not honor this coupon in-store. What a bunch of nonsense! The coupon clearly states both online and in-store redemption methods. Please, everyone of us needs to complain to Sears about this coupon debacle! Really, do they think we’re blind. Then sales clerk proudly showed me the sign, and I proudly told her I wasn’t buying anything and walked out. Who is the marketing genius that comes up with these schemes? Maybe they could hire someone who can think two steps ahead before they screw up, rather than someone who screws up, then wants the customer to pick up the cost, time and anger at their mess up!

so now its our fault that sears was too stupid to run their language by someone in legal? i wasted 90 minutes shopping with my daughter only to be told that the coupon was not being accepted. i crumbled it up and threw it at the cashier. that is bullcrap! sears is now off the list of places that i will ever spend my money at.

    pissedoffdad,

I understand being frustrated but throwing something at a cashier is beyond unacceptable. She didn’t create the coupon and it wasn’t her idea to stop accepting it. The poor woman was just doing her job . If she had pushed your coupon through she would have, at minimum, gotten reprimanded and nobody wants to give their employers an excuse to fire them in this economy. By all means write corporate, refuse to give them your business or tell everyone you know not to shop there but please don’t abuse the powerless employees at the bottom.

Same thing happened to me. I never shop at Sears and they are hurting for business. I picked out two shirts, got to the register and she said they would not take computer generated coupons. Made me feel like I had made a fraudulent coupon; I just didn’t like the way she made me feel. It was embarrassing and made me feel like I was doing something wrong. Who should we report our dissatisfaction to? I’m just a bit peeved by the whole thing.
