A few weeks ago I shared that my family was participating in the Listerine Oral Care Challenge to promote better oral care habits for the entire family. I have to admit this was a bit of a tough challenge for us, but we made a lot of progress overall.
It seemed like the mouth rinse was a big hit and the easiest habit to maintain — as evidenced by the additional cleaning of the faucets, mirrors and sinks I’ve had to do in the bathrooms. But that’s a small price to pay for a healthier mouth! The flossing was a tougher sell because none of my kids are really old enough and coordinated enough to do it themselves, yet they’re old enough that they really don’t want Mom messing around in their mouths too much. We’ll continue to work on this area…
But the biggest success of the challenge was just getting them focused on brushing more often and being more aware of the concept of better oral care habits as a whole and why they’re important. The Listerine Oral Care Challenge gave us the tools to talk about why brushing alone isn’t enough and inspired them to want to take better care in brushing, rinsing and flossing — ensuring that they maintain these gorgeous smiles that I love!

The habits we instill in our children while they’re still young and usually habits that will last a lifetime, so I’d encourage you all to give this a try with your kids. Listerine has some useful information and printable tip sheets available that I would definitely recommend checking out!

My daughter is almost 3, and for her to allow me to brush her teeth fully, I let her brush mine first so that she sees how everything works and then she also feels like she had “her turn”. She won a prize at her dentist and got entered into the “No Cavity Club”!!! I am proud!

We have our kids choose their own toothbrush at the store along with their favorite character of flavor toothpaste and mouth rinse. It makes them feel like “Big boys” and they are more excited about brushing their teeth.

We try and be as preventative as possible. Seeing the dentist twice a year and flossing really seem to help!

I have a 4 and 5 year old so to keep them brushing I sing silly songs to them for 2 minutes while they brush them say SPIT. It’s goofy but it works.

I try to make it part of the routine so they remember. going in there and helping them works too.

My tip would be to make (or buy) a sign that says “Brush, Floss, Rinse”. I see them all over the place in stores and would be useful putting right near the sink or even on the bathroom door so you see it when you walk in.

To help my family, I made up a silly song to sing with my kids during our night time hygiene routine. They are more likely to do it if it’s fun!
