Go Green with Kroger Giveaway: $25 Gift Cards

April 16, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski

Win a $25 Kroger Gift CardLooking for another green freebie? Well, look no further. Kroger wants to give you a reusable shopping bag just for entering their reusable shopping bag contest. All you have to do is design your own reusable shopping tote, and they’ll credit your Kroger card for the cost of one of their bags.

Even better? When you submit your design, others will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite design. Great prizes will be awarded to the top 10 bag designs, with one lucky designer winning a $1,000 Kroger gift card and the chance for their bag design to be sold in stores. Judges will also select four finalists who will receive $250 Kroger gift cards and five runners-up who will receive $100 Kroger gift cards!

How’s that for an incentive to go green? And yes, that’s my not-so-creative bag pictured above.

Need another incentive?

Kroger has generously given me two $25 gift cards to pass on to two lucky winners to help draw attention to their green efforts. I hope you’ll all take a minute to create a bag and submit your design!

How can you win?

Share your biggest barrier to using reusable shopping totes. Is it hard to remember them? Do you have difficulties bagging your items? Would a small credit for using them be an incentive? Can you think of any ways to solve the issue? I’m just interested in your thoughts on the whole issue.

+++++++++++++++

Every reader has three methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!

Methods of entry:

I guess my biggest barrier is the fact that I am so frugal that I don’t buy trash bags for trash–I recycle grocery bags to use as trash bags at home. I also use them everyday in the kitchen: when my husband or son brings the milk buckets in from milking the cow, I set the buckets on the counter, but I set them on a grocery bag so that germs from the barn floor don’t get on my counter. So I use and reuse those bags, and they help save me money!

My biggest barrier is forgetting them at home or not bringing enough with me. I think I’ll just leave them in the car from now on!

My greatest challenge with reusable bags is remembering to take them with me. I’m trying to keep them in my trunk now, but don’t always remember.

My biggest challenge is using them at CVS or Walgreens. Since those stores automatically bag as they scan it makes it harder to give the cashier my bags before s/he starts bagging. Also, my Giant grocery store used to give a $0.03 credit per bag, but now I live in Kroger-land and they don’t have that incentive – I would LOVE that! A penny saved is a penny earned, right?? Thanks so much! ~Megan

I don’t forget to take the bags in Krogers with me but my biggest barrier is judging how many bags to take in the store. I put my bags back in my car as soon as I empty my groceries.

When I first visited Paris, (8 years ago), there was a store called Leader Price. It was a neighborhood store, with amazing prices. I would go there to grab food for us to have in our room and for very little money, we would have a feast. One interesting thing, was that you would have to pay to get a plastic bag. Most people brought their own bag. It could be interesting if you HAD to buy the bags for your groceries, plastic or fabric. Even if it was just a small amount. Many of us try to get in the habit, but forget them.

I do use reusable bags for a variety of items and keep them in my car. But I also happily ask for paper bags at my grocery store and reuse both paper and plastic bags to pick up after my dog, Roxy in the yard and on walks.

My biggest barrier is actually remembering the bags. Trying to get out of the door to shop with my toddler is hectic, and I’m lucky if I can just remember the diaper bag and my purse. When we lived in Canada a while back though, I shopped at a grocery store that charged a nickle per plastic bag “bought” from the store. Since I had to pay for those bags, I never had a problem remembering to bring my own. (These were also pre-baby days though…) I wouldn’t be opposed to stores charging per plastic bag here.

I just created a bag. The biggest barrier is what lots of others have said already – remembering to put them in the car and/or taking them in the store.

I always leave them in the car and don’t remember them until I am in the check out lane. I do use paper instead of plastic if I don’t remember to take my reusable ones into the store. . .

The biggest barrier in using the green totes for my family is taking them into the store. If you think about it, you’ll need more than one for those weekly shopping trips to stock up on your fresh produce and such. So say you need five or six bags. Then you have to leave them in the cart with you until you check out. That’s valuble cart space! Then when you get to the check out, you have to dig them out from underneath all of your groceries.

My biggest barrier is lugging everything that I need into the store. I have my 1 year old son, his sippy cup, his shopping cart cover, my coupons and my purse. Adding more to this list is tough. I am going to try though. Maybe I could carry his cup and cover into the store in a shopping bag.

I have two barriers, actually, but working on them both. The first is budget. Reusable bags are inexpensive, yes, but I made less than $10,000 last year, and I’m a single mom, so it’s sometimes hard to come up with even an extra dollar! But I’m starting to make some of my own reusable bags (I cut plastic grocery bags into strips and then crochet them into a sturdier reusable bag!)

And also, remembering to take the reusables to the store can be a tough one! But I’m getting better about that. When I walk to the store, I have a little go-getter cart that I take with me, and I store the reusable bags right in that, so they are ready to go when I am! Now to work on remembering to take them when [ex] Husband gives me a ride to the grocery store!
