I carpool with two coworkers, keep my canvas shopping bags in my van so I always have them with me, pack my son’s lunch for school and daughter’s drinks for daycare in reusable containers, and use a water filter system at home instead of buying bottled water. We also switched to pellet fuel to reduce our dependency on home heating oil.

here are some of my favorites

use mixture of 3-1 water and vinegar to clean counter, windows, mirrors, and even produce!

cut a lid in the top of a formula can the size of the top of a jar of baby food and VOILA! an instant money bank for your wee one. my little girl loved playing with this more than any of her toys.

newspaper spread under mulch controls weeds

paprika sprinkled around the foundation of your home can help with ants!

I like to shop at thrift stores as much as possible. I also donate all of my used clothing. I can’t always afford to give money to charities, but I can afford to pass on my used clothing. There are several items that thrift stores cannot take (like my son’s old toddler bed and ceiling fan) and I listed them in the free section of craigs list.

We have buckets around our yard and under our downspouts to collect rainwater which we in turn use to water the plants in our garden.

Now that the weather is better, I am drying some of my clothes outside instead of using the dryer! Saves water and energy and the clothes smells fresh.

My children and I have challenged ourselves to lower our power bill by $10 this month…small, I know, but so are they 8-). Some ideas we had were not turning on lights during the day…instead we open the curtains (our lot is shaded), not watching tv and playing games inside/outside, opening the refrigerator less by putting a food list on the outside so we can decide what we want without standing there with the door wide open, create less laundry to be washed by re-wearing clothes (jeans for a two or so days, Sunday dress clothes that are worn for a few hours, etc.), turning the water off while soaping up in the shower and hang dry the towels to be used more than once are some of the ideas we came up with.

Consider having more than one trash type bin in your kitchen
to easily separate and sort mixed contaners, from the trash.
When something is right at hand, it’s not so much of a fuss to do it.

We purchased energy efficient appliances to help reduce our water consumption as well as the amount of electricity that we use. We’ve already seen a difference in our utility bills!

It’s pretty simple, but refilling a reusable water bottle instead of buying case after case of plastic. My family is guilty of this and I’m trying to get everyone on board with reusable bottles!

I line dry small loads of clothes and have switched to CFC bulbs. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth, take shorter showers and install a water miser shower head. Easy tips that have saved us some money!

I always carry extra bags with me when I walk to pick up trash. I have a bag for cans, paper, plastic and one for things that can’t be recycled. I look like something from the movies with all the bags tied around me. Thanks for the giveaway.

Reuse your used dryer sheets for dusting (you can also get away with tearing your dryer sheets in half and it’s just as effective). Thanks!

If you add a small water bottle to the tank on your toliet it uses less water to fill the tank.

My best tip is to leave buckets/barrels outside to collect rainwater to reuse in your garden or flowers. Also keep your freezer full with milk jugs with water – freezers run more effecient on full. Thank you

Cool, I’d love to win this, my best green tip is to stop using paper towels, something our household recently did. My hubby was a huge paper towel user (abuser) , so it was a challenge, but we’ve done it!

Before tossing it out, see if you can find another use for it! Have a craft day, use it for storage, or pass it on to a friend. :D

Use a pump dispenser for dish detergent to use less detergent.

Clean your dryer lint filter after every use and your dryer vent regularly to be more energy efficient.

Doing crafts? Use what you’ve got. So much stuff comes in the mail, magazines, ads, solicitations, and you can use those for collages, flowers, making recycled paper, weaving, etc.

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...
