CFL Lightbulbs! I love them, we seriously reduced our own energy bill $40 in one month by changing all the bulbs in our house. The last longer than regular bulbs so there is less trash. I seriously LOVE them!

    I LOVE reading everyones’ tips!!
One easy way to save money and electricty is just by remembering to turn off the lights when not in use! Throw open the curtains and shades, and let the natural sunlight come in. It’s cheery, too! Unplug things that are not in use – think cell phone chargers, computers, appliances, etc. Even when not in use, the use energy.
I also use re-usable grocery bags. And when I happen to get plastic grocery bags or plastic bags from shopping stores, I use them to dispose of poopy diapers, coffee grounds, etc. :)

I put off using the heater and air conditioner at my house for as long as I can each season by strategically opening and closing the blinds and windows. In the warm months, I close the blinds during the day to keep the sun out but open them at night to take advantage of the radiant cooling from the windows. During the cooler months, I do the opposite to take advantage of radiant heating during the day.

This is a small “green” step, but I use microfiber cloths on my Swiffer rather than the throwaway refills. It reduces waste, is less expensive, and works very well.

I love getting free magazine subscriptions, but don’t love the paper waste they create. So when I’m done reading them, I take them to my book club and share them with the other members.

Instead of using plastic baggies for my son’s sandwich and snacks for lunch at school, I bought him two sets of sponge bob sandwich container and snack containers, we save 2-4 baggies a day by doing this!

Wow. So nice to see others like me.
I am glad to see re-usable shopping bags are becoming mainstream. Now if only some cashiers won’t look at you like you have 5 heads when you go to use them!
Compost – creates less waste and gives you great soil in return.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – buy less, use what you do buy in more ways, when you are done look for a way to recycle it.

We do an organic garden! It greatly cuts down on our carbon footprint. No chemicals are released into the environment. We don’t have to drive to the store to get veggies. The food isn’t imported from out of the country. AND, the plants help with CO2. My kids learn an important science lesson, and we all get a good dose of sunshine! It benefits all around! (Plus, we compost, so that also adds to the environmental goodness!)

We recycle whatever our town permits us to and also reuse whenever possible. When shopping, we use cardboard boxes or reusable tote bags instead of plastic. I reuse chip bags, bread bags, and inner cereal bags for cleaning litter boxes as well.

Something like 20% of the oil that is used in the country is used in the food industry- for fertilizers, processing food, and transporting it. Eating local foods (to avoid transportation costs), whole foods (to avoid processing costs) and organic foods (to avoid petroleum-based fertilizer usage) is a big step toward reducing our carbon footprint.

My best tip is to use CFL light bulbs. Most say they last about 7 years, so an hour or so spent one day to replace your light bulbs can potential give you 7 years of savings!

When I was a Girl Scout we learned to leave a place better than we found it. My grandmother taught me to be content with less…(this one has taken a while to put into practice) and she shared her love of gardening and outdoors with me. She was a homeschool grandma without knowing it! She talked to me as though I was a grownup too, and showed me how to reuse and make do with what you have. My mom taught me the coupon basics and also how to shop the sales. With seven kids, that comes in handy. She also saw the value in hand-me-downs and fixing/altering something to make something new! It is interesting to me how all of these life lessons are timeless and yet cool.

My best green tip is to use less water. I turn off the water when I brush my teeth and I only shower as long as I need to. I mean who really needs to shower for 25 minutes? Thanks!!

The most important thing we can do is to teach our children the importance of recycling and using our resources wisely. If we can raise the next generation to really respect the earth, we will be doing so much to save the resources we have. And of course, the best way to teach children is by example!
