This isn’t really anything new but I think one of the best tips is teaching your children about not throwing trash on the ground, and showing this by example. It is so depressing seeing garbage everywhere you drive!

Sometimes, I see random water bottles lying around school or at home so I take it and water some plants before I recycle it. Plants and trees really love it! lol
Lori
We use refillable water bottles at sports events instead of plasic disposables. Lots less waste.

I (almost) always use my reusable bags now, and I recycle everything I can, thanks!

My best green tip is to recycle all those newspapers I get from coupon clipping including expired coupons and inserts. I take them as well as my magazines that I am done with to my son’s school as they get money for them.

My family uses recyclable bags…all the time, not to mention the 5cent incentive. We also refill all plastic bottles with water or gatorage for sports!! I am going to start recycling my daily papers!!

My family puts leaves and grass raked or mowed from the yard into a compost bin (and we add food scraps to it now and then). It makes wonderful, rich dirt for planting season, saves us from buying more dirt at the store, and reduces our use of trash bags, and filling landfills!
Denise
I use reusable totes for shopping and I am learning the wonderful world of recycling…I grew up in a town with no recycling facility, but now half of my garbage can is recycling only so I have no excuse!

I’ve seen lots of families have shelves and entertainment centers lined with hundreds of DVDs and audio story CDs for their children. We’ve chosen to go a different route, that doesn’t take up space in our home, nor does it mean we have so much plastic and “junk” sitting around all over the place. We get free weekly downloads of “ol’ timey” radio shows and stories, (some of them being word for word unabridged stories and literature), and we save them on our computer and then transfer them to MP3 players with attached speakers so we can listen to these great stories and literature while folding clothes as a family, or eating a meal together (we don’t listen to stories each day while sitting down to eat together, but once a week has been fun). We can listen to them in the car, or from the computer if doing a project in our study.
While downloading music regularly is very common for families, this is a very frugal type of entertainment for families, although for some children it may take some getting used to for older stories, etc.
It’s also “green” because we are not taking up room in our houses with rows and rows of CDs, buying all these entertainment toys/systems for our children, etc. Just less stuff in the landfills, eventually.
https://www.homeschoolradioshows.com/ is a great resource for these free weekly downloads!

any time I have sheets of paper that have only been used on one side I save it and use it in my printer so as not to waist paper. Not everything has to be printed on blank paper. Save all my envelopes that I don’t use that come in my bill and use them later for other things. Save bubble wrap envelopes I get mailed to me and use them to mail item later. Can pull labels off or just tape one over old.

Use reusable shopping bags and reusable water bottle!

I just bought a reusable water bottle the other day (from Walmart for $4!)…not only does it eliminate the throw away bottles, but it also helps me to drink more water b/c I keep it filled and close at hand! Green and healthy :)

those horrible plastic bags, they have got to go. I am finally carrying my reusable bags in my car and I take one in everywhere I go. I am also big on not wasting, I use every last drop of everything I use.
Lynn
I recycle the glass jars from baby food and basically all the paper junk i get in the mail. I turn the faucet off when not in use especially in between dish washing.
Deanna
We use a rain water collector and use it to water my veggie garden and flowers. It’s a lil more work, but i feel really good knowing that i’m not using clean tap water to water the dirt! LOL

All of us should do our part to save our planet.
Here is an artistic animated ecard for Earth Day, Blue Planet. It is an underwater production completely with many reef fishes, a turtle, a ray and dolphins.
It is free to send and to spread the important message of saving our planet.

When I go to the store I always ask for paper instead of plastic and if I’m only going for one item, then I don’t get a bag at all. We also reuse our water bottles and I’m also trying to phase them out of our home all together by buying portable, washable water bottles.

a good tip i learned recently is to use all those newspapers i buy to line the bottom of a raised bed for gardening, as a barrier to the grass growing up into the garden bed! i plan to get at least two raised beds built this weekend.

My best green tip for earth day is reduce, reuse, recycle. I know I didn’t come up with the slogan, but it sums it up SO perfectly! We try to purchase items with less packaging and processing, reuse the containers things come in, and then recycle them when they’ve seen their better days. Also (as I learned in Sierra Society in high school) always leave a place cleaner than you found it. It’s great not to litter, but better to go a step beyond and pick up the trash of those less-considerate!

I use the totes when I go grocery shopping. I am really loving the free ones we have been able to get free. The other day I got one from Delallo. Yesterday, I finally got my “This bag helped feed hundreds” tote from donating Stouffer points…it only took 5 months for me to get it. Also when I boil potatoes to make potato salad, I don’t dump the water down the drain…when it cools, we water plants outside. You can use any vegetable water. I recycle all newspaper, boxes, shredded paper, scrap paper, cans and bottles.
We love ice water…this would be a great thing to have. Thanks.
Sarah
I plan my shopping ahead of time, and combine multiple errands when I drive to the store. We use evaporative coolers in the summer. They use MUCH less power than A/C. I buy in bulk to save on packaging, and try to buy local as much as I can. I use cloth shopping bags and diapers and a stainless water bottle. I would really like to do some solar power, as I live in Arizona, but the start up is a bit pricey.

If you love scrapbooking traditionally w/ paper, consider giving digital scrapbooking a try. Print only the layouts you totally love. All products you download can be used unlimited times. Especially great if you love to share photos digitally anyway (share on a family blog, save LOTS of layouts on a dvd disc to be mailed to family, have layouts show in a digital frame or keychain.

I reuse my old laundry dryer sheets by dusting the house with them!

Lately I have been making my own laundry detergent and I save money on the supplies because they cost much less then commercial soaps. Also the packing is cardboard and paper which are easier to recycle, more compact. You can search online for it.

If you don’t compost throw food scraps like raw veggies ends in your yardwaste instead of the regular trash

I buy sweaters and other crochet or knitted items from thrift stores and reuse yarn for creating cute stuff :) . I love using recycled wool yarn and making felted stuff like bowls. another thing I like is you can use plastic grocery bags to make plarn (plastic + yarn) and crochet reusable grocery bags. it’s a great way to recycle those plastic bags and create something useful.

I am teaching my little ones to recycle so one day it will just be second nature for them…They love sorting and taking trips to the recycling center!!!

My green tip is to reuse and recycle. When my youngest grows out of her pants we have been turning them into capris and shorts. Then once she can’t wear them, we donate her clothes to the local elementary school for the nurse to use. You would be surprised at the different accidents that can happen during the day at a school. The parents then wash the clothes and return them, so they can be re-used again and again.
