Comfort Giveaway: Vicks VapoRub Prize Package (ARV $450)

May 9, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski

vaporubDid you know that kids can catch six to ten colds year-round?

I’ve never kept track, but that sounds about right. I don’t think there was a single week this past winter when at least one of the kids was feeling under the weather.

Vicks would like to provide one very lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader with a little extra comfort for both mom and child. They’ve put together a “Vicks VapoRub Comfort Care” gift basket valued at $450 filled with Vicks VapoRub along with some other favorite items to make children more comfortable. The basket includes a plush Little Giraffe blanket, classic children’s books and lullaby CDs. And don’t think they forgot about Mom, especially with Mother’s Day a few days away! They’re also including a 100% cashmere wrap, some favorite soothing skincare items from L’Occitane and a manicure/pedicure kit.

For child:

  • Vicks VapoRub
  • Chenille Blanket
  • Soothing lullaby music
  • Assortment of children’s books: Corduroy, Harold and the Purple Crayon, The Giving Tree, The Little Prince

For mom:

  • Nordstrom Cashmere Sweater Knit Wrap
  • L’Occitane Shea La Vie Gift Set and Hand Cream
  • Sephora Professional Manicure/Pedicure Nail Kit
  • Essie Spa Pedicure Mini Kit

Want to win a this fabulous Vicks VapoRub Prize Package?

Of course you do – I wish I could win myself! Just tell me about your favorite way to comfort yourself or your child when a nasty cold infiltrates your family. Do you have a special remedy that’s been passed from generation to generation? Maybe you make a big batch of chicken noodle soup like me.

At times when one of my loved ones isn’t feeling their best, I make chicken soup and serve fresh lemon tea with honey. Lots of love and a soothing atmosphere helps to make the time a little bit tolerable. I also found that after changing the bed linens, I mist them with lavender spray to allow for pleasant rest.

No matter what age your child is, I KNOW that homemade chicken soup with lots of carrots, celery, onion and fresh parsley along with yummy egg noodles makes everyone feel a little better. No instant fix, but comfort food, along with the extra TLC and rest one needs.

I make homemade chicken soup, hot tea and a nice bed on the sofa to snuggle up in a cozy blanket. And, if the little ones have a sore throat, I use a baby bottle and cut an X in the bottle nipple and fill with clear fluids. They love to sip on it and it doesn’t spill. I know, probably shouldn’t do it, but my mom did it for me and it was a huge comfort when I was ill. :)

Whenever chicken goes on sale at the grocery store, I buy as much as I can afford. Then, I go home and make a ton of chicken noodle soup with everything in it except for the egg noodles – then I freeze it. When someone in our family is sick, out comes the already-made soup from the freezer. It’s easy to thaw it out in the microwave and then heat it in a pot on the stove with egg noodles.

When we’re sick at our house, I’ll make a big pot of homemade chicken noodle soup and hot rolls. We normally just take it easy and watch movies all day, but it always makes us feel better!

When we are under the weather, we veg in our comfy clothes with the favorite stuffies of the sick kid (or both kids favorites – if only the grown ups are sick). We watch movies and eat otter pops for extra fluids.

As an extra, when the coughing gets bad, use Vicks VapoRub on small kids feet, cover with socks before bed. Makes the coughing fits better.

If we have a sore throat we love to sip on warm beverages (hot chocolate, apple cider or tea). A nice blanket wrapped around us on the couch and settle in for some tv time.

This sounds amazing! When we get sick, we rest a lot, drink lots of fluids, and of course give each other tons of snuggles and love.

My favorite way to comfort one of my kids when they have a cold is lots of snuggle time with Mom, and (usually) a new stuffed animal. I always got a stuffed animal when I was really sick as a kid, and I loved it.

    Thanks, i hope I win!!

We don’t really have a passed down remedy, just lots of love, blankets and movies. Those usually do the trick!

I like to make something spicy, like a taco soup or something cajun-I think the spices sweat out the cold/flu. Then I cuddle up with a warm quilt and my cats and watch TV and nap-usually all better by morning!

This past fall my daughter started preschool and – wow – cold after cold after stomach bug. When she has a cold, we get out the cold mist humidifier, prop her bed up a bit to help drainage, and yes, put “chest lotion” (vicks) on her chest. Helps a lot! Thanks!

Hot tea, a good book, and a fuzzy blanket are my best remedies when I get a cold. When one of my sons gets a cold, I get out the humidifier and Vicks.

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
