BIG Giveaway: $500 Walmart Gift Card Sponsored by Nickelodeon

December 2, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski

Nickelodeon
I’ve hinted about it for days now, and finally here it is – your chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card!!!

walmart-500-gift-cardJust in time to make your holidays a little happier, Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer this fabulous contest hosted by the Elevenmoms.

Yep, that’s right – each Elevenmom is giving away one $500 gift card on her blog, so you have 20 chances to win! Find details on the Elevenmoms site on how you can enter to win each one. Please note that you may only win once.

So who wants to add $500 to their holiday budget? You didn’t really think I was going to make this EASY for you, did you? You’re going to have to work a little bit for a prize this big.

In light of the tough economic times, this contest is all about discovering new ways to help each other save money. Yesterday I wrote a post detailing seven easy ways to cut at least $1 from your budget per day in the hopes that it would inspire you to participate in The One Dollar Give. I only just scratched the surface though, and I know that you all have some amazing tips to share as well.

So there you go – holiday-themed or not, I want you to share your best methods for cutting back by at least $1 a day!

Methods of Entry*

Every reader can submit up to three (3) different tips to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!

YOU MUST LEAVE A TIP WITH EACH ENTRY. ENTRIES THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES BELOW WILL BE DELETED.

1. Leave a comment sharing your best money-saving tip to cut at least $1 a day out of your budget!

2. Subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment letting me know you have done so along with another money-saving tip. If you’re already a subscriber, simply leave a separate comment letting me know you’re already subscribed along with another money-saving tip. Lovin’ my subscribers! You guys make this all possible.

3. Spread the word about this contest in some manner and come back and leave a link in a separate comment along with another money-saving tip. If you have a blog, you can blog about it. But if you don’t have a blog, you’re not at a disadvantage. You could review and Stumble it. You could Twitter it. You could post about it in a forum. Use your imagination!

*Please read the rules for entering and the timeline information carefully as this contest differs from the usual giveaways that I host.

It is important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment is equal to one entry. Sorry to harp on this, but it really is that important to tally and select the winner easily, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me simplify the process!

Prize:
1 $500 Walmart Gift Card

This giveaway ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, December 15th. The judges will select ten of their favorite entries to be highlighted on Deal Seeking Mom, and I’ll use Random.org to select the winning comment.  The winner will be posted on Tuesday, December 16th, and the prize will be mailed out on December 17th. Good luck!

While you’re in a contest entering mood, don’t forget to check out the Giveaway Gathering for a variety of contests being hosted on Deal Seeking Mom readers’ blogs!

Entry/Tip #2 ~~ I spread the word! I’m convinced that you really never have to pay full price (overpriced!) for much of anything. Example: shop after seasons and purchase items for only change. I love using cute seasonal napkins & plates when hostessing … my cabinet has fall paper products for next year & I’m beginning to enjoy the Christmas-y ones that I bought nearly 11 months ago.

One way to save a $1 a day (or more!) is to plan your meals around what’s on sale. For example, I was able to get some wraps and salad mix on the cheap this week, so we’ll be having wraps for dinner tonight. We’ve been wanting to have perogies for dinner lately, but they haven’t been on sale with a coupon match. So we’ll have to wait until I can get them at a better price.

I am posting on our homeschool group’s forum, but it is a private one, so I don’t think you can view the direct link. I am not yet a blogger and this is the only forum I really post on. The public page is https://www.homeschool-life.com/mo/chec/.

Tip #3 = instead of buying dryer sheets, put liquid fabric softener (about 4 parts) and water (about 1 part) into a container with a lid (I like the Tupperware Pick-A-Deli). Use a washcloth or sponge (you can cut it into halves or quarters) instead of dryer sheets–just ring it out and toss it in with your load. I’m not sure how much money it saves, but in the long run, it saves a lot! That one jug of fabric softener can last a LONG time!

Our family saves money each day by packing my husband’s lunch. Much cheaper than eating out. And he often takes leftovers, so that makes his lunch very inexpensive. I’m so thankful he happily eats packed lunches.

#1 Eat out one time less per week than you normally would. This includes fast food… Nowadays it’s hard to get a full combo meal with a drink for under $7 by the time tax is added on. If you cut out one meal/week out, you’ve saved $1/day!

Eat your leftovers! We save well over $1 a day by eating leftovers 1-2 nights a week!

If you have a cell phone and a landline, cut your landline down to the bare minimum. If the important people know your cellphone number, then you don’t really need call-waiting/caller id on your landline. Be persistent with the phone company, too. I had to ask 3 times to get down to the lowest rate.

Entry/Tip #3 ~~ I subscribed! Have those leftovers been in the fridge almost too long?? Is it something that can be used in soup? Toss it in a container and put it in the freezer before you have to toss it in the garbage!!

We eat icecream in, rather than going out for icecream. A pack of vanilla icecream for $5 dollars and a 2 liter of rootbeer for $1 at Wal-Mart means I can have rootbeer floats for the entire family at the same price it would cost me to purchase two at Braum’s or Dairy Queen.

#2 Carpool to events/work as often as possible! If you’re carpooling an average of just 20 miles every 2 days, you’ve saved $1/day.

A more realistic tip that works for me, is to do all my errand running/shopping, etc one day a week. This keeps me from going to town several times a week, which means I fill my tank just once every week and a half instead of once a week. Doing this saves me about $17/week, which is way over the $1/day goal!!

As a busy mom to 6, I’m always looking for ways to save time and money.

Since most of my life revolves around laundry and the kitchen:
I use half the amount of soap they say to use on the bottle, unless it’s a very crusty muddy load of clothes. For every day cleaning, less works fine.

In the kitchen, I cut down my juice with water. When making Kool Aid I use only 3/4 c of sugar. And if I’m making a box meal (gasp!) like Hamburger Helper..I use 1lb meat to 2 boxes.

I buy 1/4 of cow or so at a time. It’s usually higher quality, lasts for a long time and saves me time – I always have some on hand to whip something up.

#3 Filter your own drinking water. I use a Brita Pitcher and filter all our drinking water so we don’t have to buy it for at home. With three people in our family we could easily go thru 1-2 gallons a day. The Britta costs me just pennies, not dollars/day!

car pooling – Make friends with the other moms of your kids – at daycare, at school, whereever – there is bound to be someone who lives close by. Cut fuel bills and have a few more minutes for yourself.

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
