I am a teacher in the inner city, and, once a month, I have my students eat in the classroom. Lunch usually ends up being closer to an hour than the 30 min. its supposed to be, but, during this time the kids really open up to me and I can find out all about what is really going on with them. They love that I cook all of the food myself, and they always tell me what a great baker I am. (I usually only use refridgerated dough for the cookies….but they dont need to know that) Most of my students dont get home cooked meals very much, so, I don’t mind the time, effort, or money…its for those kiddos.

Sometimes I will cut out things from magazines and leave them in their lunch, or else leave the kids notes. Each lunch also is healthy, but also has something fun for them to eat, too.

My daughter gets the free lunch, but we go over the menu in advance and I help her choose the best options for each day. When she gets home we discuss it and it has become a routine now and she can’t wait to tell me what she chose.

I put a small treat, like a Hershey’s Kiss, that makes my son feel like he’s having a dessert. I also make sure his sandwich has whole wheat bread for extra fiber – he likes the taste and I like the nutritions!

I cut my kids’ sandwiches with a fun cookie cutter so they have a sandwich “puzzle” as a surprise.

This will be Kassidy’s first year at school so I’m reading what everyone else does for healthy lunches. I really think the one that sticks out for me is the sandwich in shapes. How fun will that be when she opens up her lunch box and sees a heart?

I posted my first comment without telling you how I make my kids’ lunches healthy and fun. Please disregard the first entry. My kids are young enough to still eat at home. My daughter just started kinder. So, I want to make sure she eats a good lunch. Yesterday, she asked for chicken and broccoli. I usually provide some kind of dip like Ranch or ketchup and they usually eat up their lunch quickly, even the broccoli. I think it’s weird that they dip their broccoli in ketchup but whatever it takes, right. Thank you for a fun give-a-way.

My kids love sandwiches made on waffles. Peanut butter and Jelly is their fave!
