Ask DSM Readers: Are You Ready For Halloween?

Ask DSM Readers: Are You Ready For Halloween?Photo by Ramchandran Maharajapuram

Every week I’ll pose a question for you to share your experiences and tips. If you have a question that you’d like me to post, I’d love to hear from you!

Just three days until Halloween! Do you have your costumes and candy ready to go? This year, my two oldest boys are dressing up as Iron Man, my daughters are going as Belle and Ariel and our youngest is going to be Woody from Toy Story. At two-and-a-half, he’s my polite one, so he’s been practicing saying “Twick or tweat…pwease!”

Are you ready for Halloween?  Do you buy or make your costumes? Do you trick or treat in your neighborhood, or do you attend a community event?  Do you share your kid’s candy?  Do you have any last-minute costume ideas?

Join the discussion — add your two cents to previous Ask DSM Readers questions too!

My cousin made our kids’ costumes. They are going as strawberries. It is very cute. A great last minute costume is to get water ballons, write a M on them and tape them on your clothes. You will be a bag of m and m’s.

My twins are 7. They are going as Mario and Luigi, and our baby girl is a poodle. I LOVE the snuggly, zip up baby costumes. The boys are always something coordinating-like Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan, or Optimus and Bumblebee…I think next year they’ll be like ketchup and mustard or something like that. We have both sets of grandparents over, and everyone takes turns taking the kids out to trick or treat…it’s nice. We also use our church’s popcorn popper and pass out warm popcorn to the parents :)

Ooooo…I wish we lived in your neighborhood. Gotta love freshly popped popcorn! We used to do the coordinating costume thing too. My oldest two are only eleven months apart, one boy and one girl. One year we did Blue and Steve. Another, Mickey and Minnie and my favorite was Chuckie and Angelica from Rugrats. Now they’re “too old for that!” As far as being ready…sure am. We are giving out Capri Sun purchased during Kroger’s latest buy 10 save $5 sale. My twelve year old son is going as a Jimmy Buffet fan, eleven year old daughter as Smurfette, 9 year old son as Shaggy complete with a frightened Scooby clinging to his leg, 4 year old as a cowboy, and 2 year old as a Mickey Mouse firefighter or NeeNar as he describes it. Happy Halloween!

Xander, our 2 1/2 year old will be dressing up as a Ninja for Halloween. He is going to be the cutest Ninja ever!! We are going to Deanna Rose Farmstead, to the mall to trick or treat and then doing Trunk or Treat with his cousins. Super busy!

I always get my costumes 75% off after Halloween for the next year. So this year,my oldest is going to be a High School Musical character and my 3 yr old is going to be a pirate. But I don’t know if she’s going to go for the patch over her eye. I just dread all the candy. They don’t need it and I don’t either!!

I don’t have any kids, but I’m excited about Halloween! My boss gave us 10 pounds of candy to give to trick-or-treaters as our Halloween “Bonus.” I’m really happy that it wasn’t the cheapest candy either. Plenty of chocolate! I’m probably going to a party as well, but I can’t decide if I want to be a fairy or a crayon.

My 8 year old daughter is going as a unicorn, she found the costume at Salvation Army and is a one piece with a hood and everything. Its very warm and only cost $5. I was kinda shocked when she picked it but at least she’ll be warm. My son is going as a Bull Rider from the PBR, named Ryan McConell so its been interesting with his costume trying to get the right pieces thankfully he already had the hat, boots, and jeans. My eldest will not be dressing up because she is 15 and the baby will be going as a witch. I splurged on her costume this year at Toys R Us. I was going to dress up for my brother-in-laws adults only party but his ex girlfriend will be there and Id rather stay home with the kids after Trick or Treating. We are going to buy pumpkins this afternoon at Save A Lot then to a barn in the city tonight (very random barn in the middle of the city). Last year my in-laws can down from Traverse City, this year they aren’t but we will be with my parents, and then stop by my brothers movie theater.

This year my nine year old is wearing my old cheerleading uniform (I even had my old pom poms!). My son (18months) will be a football player (we are borrowing a helmet but we pick it up sat so as of now his is not complete, yikes!). I’ll be a referee and their father is going as a coach! Total spent: $25!

Quick costume idea: spa princess/slumber party girl. Robe and face mask and ta-da!

Nicole, that is too funny about the robe and face mask – I just said to my husband last night that I could wear my PJs and a face mask (like an ordinary night) to hand out candy! Hahaha! Have a great Halloween!

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...
