Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.
Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.
Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!
My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!
The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!
One Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Kwikset SmartKey prize pack that includes:
- Your choice of a Arlington handleset, Tustin lever or Juno knob
- SmartCode Signature Series Keyless Deadbolt

Ha! I had my 14 mo old lock us all out of the house – he was just tall enough and had just started to toddle when he came upon the bright shiny brass door knob. Ever so interesting…It was winter and I was struggling to buckle the 2 yr-old into his carseat while the car warmed up. The 2 yr-old and I sat beside the sliding glass door for an hour, waiting for my husband to come home from work and let us in. The REALLY funny part though, was when the 14 mo old found my coupon folder and pulled them out one-at-a time and gleefully watched them flutter to the floor. Mommy never let them play with the coupons…..
Now we keep an extra key with the neighbors!

We’ve multiple keys which have been handed out to each family member mutliple times and it seems no one ever has one. We are hopeless. Thankfully we rarely do not have someone at home. This would be a God send for those inevitable days when the dreaded “lockout” happens. Best wishes to all!

My husband & I each have a house key, however, we enter the home through the garage which has an automatic opener. My mother in law keeps a spare key at her home and she’s 15 minutes away. I’ve definately had to use it before too!

I would love to have a lock like this. My kids each have a key. The problem is my husbands cant remember things because of his heart attack and always missplaces his keys.

This would be great! We’ve been wanting to replace our lock. I don’t even carry a key! I have had a couple of close calls with the kids locking the garage door! We would be locked out and my husband works an hour away. Definitely something on my to do list.

It helps that I’m OCD I keep my keys hooked to my purse and my hubby has the other set of keys. Don’t feel too bad my hubby locked our 3 month old inside of our car while it was running. He left the key in the ignition and shut the driver side door before opening the back door and unfortunately the vehicle automaticially locks the doors when the key is in the ignition. Trust me it is easy to do we had to call a locksmith and the guy didn’t charge us a dime. We were so frantic that my hubby was considering breaking the window because the baby was inside the car crying.Yes I had my purse but it was inside of the car. I left it in the car in a big hurry to go tinkle.
