Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?

As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.

Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.

Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!

My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!

The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!

    Don’t really have a great plan, but we do hang our keys right by the door that we leave from. When my son was two my husband got locked out while my son was inside. My husband tried to get him to turn the lock, but my son kept turning in circles instead :)

    I usually just keep my keys in the kitchen drawer but at least once a month I lose them, it never fails.

    My husband has called me at work several times because he had locked himself out of the house…. now we hide a key.

    We finally put an extra key outside the house because I’ve locked them in the house more than once! ;-)

    I don’t use my house key . . .not sure if it would work! I use the garage ~ either drive the car in or use the key pad.

    I have an extra key in my purse, a few stashed in the extra refridge in the garage and my sister and brother-in-law have keys too!

    I have one set of keys, no one has a spare. Being a mom of three little ones, we leave the door inside the garage unlocked b/c I do not have time to look for keys while trying to manage getting them in the house or carrying groceries in. Your give away would be more help then you know!

    we don’t have a good system. just put them on a hallway table. I have recently taken all the keys to work leaving my husband and kids without house or car keys!!!!!!!!!!!!

    My son actually locked me out of the house when he was younger, and I had to wait 25 minutes till my hubby got home with his keys. (It was a brand new deck sliding door) I have now given 3 keys to neighbors! My neighbor right next door gave me their key shortly after we moved in, now if I’m making supper and I need to borrow tomato paste or beans, etc….and she’s not home, she tells me to just use the key and go in and get what I need. Talk about great neighbors :)
