Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.
Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.
Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!
My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!
The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!
One Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Kwikset SmartKey prize pack that includes:
- Your choice of a Arlington handleset, Tustin lever or Juno knob
- SmartCode Signature Series Keyless Deadbolt
To enter, tell me how you manage your house keys. Do you have multiple keys in case you get locked out? Do your children have keys to the home? Perhaps a neighbor keeps a spare key in case of emergencies.

We put house keys on the dogs leashes to help prevent us from locking ourselves out. After locking myself out twice, we learned this is the best method for us. We just got a new house so I’m so worried about all the new locks and keys that come with it. This key set and key pad sound like an amazing solution!

Funny you should ask ;) Until about a week ago, the only thing I had was the garage door openers in our cars (and no code thing outside) while my husband had both a garage door opener and key to the front door. Not sure why, but when we bought the house they only gave us one key and we never bothered to make more… then we had a scare where my husband was in DC traveling and I thought the battery had died on the garage door opener! This would have left me locked out with 3 kids and NO one to let us in! Yikes! Luckily, it worked suddenly. And we made duplicate keys the second he arrived home!

I attach my keyring to my wristlet wallet and throw it in the diaper bag or in my purse. We do have a spare key hidden inside the garage, but don’t have keyless entry into the garage.

hubby and I have a spare key hidden somewhere in our yard…this, after I locked myself out TWICE in a day. how terrible! what’s worse is waking up in the morning to find the key still in the front door.

one key ring that always stays in my purse

Keeping track of my keys isnt the problem its the husband that has the problem. He leaves his keys around allowing the little one with stickey fingers to move them!

I always leave mine in my purse…I just have to find my purse. My husband leaves them where ever they land, and we are always looking for them!

I don’t manage my keys well at all. Now that I have a car that does not require the key in my hand, I find it really inconvenient to have to search for my keys to get in the house. I would love this Kwikset product!

I have too many key rings. One for each car and different keys on different rings. I get confused easily! LOL! They all are usually at the bottom of my purse where I can’t get to them easily. What a giant mess! Thanks for entering me!! Good luck everyone!

We got a new entry door and new doorknobs this summer. I didn’t realize that even though the new knob was locked on the outside you could still open it from the inside. I went outside and closed the door behind me and of course, the door was locked with the kids inside. Thankfully it was summertime and we had a window open that I was able to fit through! That first moment of panic though cost me about 10 years off my life! :)
My husband and I both have our own set of keys and when we come in we keep them in a basket by the door.

My keys are on a ring, but always in the wrong place. They are in my purse when I’m out with my husband and didn’t bring my purse, in my other coat pocket, or some such nonsense. I confess we often leave our house unlocked!
Amanda
I too use the garage door keypad to get in and then have the door unlocked from the house to the garage. It’s definitely far from ideal – however this keyless entry would solve my problem!
Yvonne
THis would be good. I need to buy a new one..
