Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.
Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.
Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!
My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!
The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!
One Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Kwikset SmartKey prize pack that includes:
- Your choice of a Arlington handleset, Tustin lever or Juno knob
- SmartCode Signature Series Keyless Deadbolt

Each week each child has to account for their set of keys – kind of like renting a movie – you want to make sure the right keys are checked back in. If not and you can’t find the key or keys – new keys must be made. My husband must account for his works keys each day and he only wants to be accountable for his personal set of keys when they turn up missing. Myself I make sure I have all my keys each evening and sometimes in the morning because they seem to move in the middle of the night. I search each one, some are color coded and other one have a plastic rubber top. I have locked myself out of the house only once and now I have another set of keys attached to a round rubber expandable band that I put on my wrist/arm for just in case I lock myself out. Now the car keys are more difficult. I won’t leave a spare under the car, but carry several sets of car keys just in case I lock myself out even though I now have AAA. I have given grandpa a set of house keys and car keys for just in case. That is how I manage my keys.

My son has an extra set of keys and he uses them a lot. I still want a keyless unlock for the front door like the car. I am sure that will be coming soon

I always keep my keys in my hand as I leave the house. If my hands are full, I put them in a pocket. Of course our adult children have keys “just in case”. Unusual circumstances (and forgetfulness) can happen to older people as well as the stressed out younger ones with small children.

I love this idea. I wish I’d thought of it first!

It’s so embarrassing how often I misplace my keys. I know one of these would bail me out of the emergency that’s waiting to happen :P

I have three kids ages 19, 15, and 11 who have keys if they remember to take them with them each day; my best friend lives around the corner and has a key; and my boyfriend of 5 years has a key if we need to call him from across town. My ex lives down the street and it would be awesome to be better assured that he does not have a copy of the key to my home!!!

MANDATORY ENTRY: Before I was married and still living at home with my mom, our neighbor kept a house key of ours ‘just in case’ the unfortunate happened and I or my mom were locked out of the house. Now that I’m married with a child, my Mom-In-Law has a key and she lives about five miles away from us. I guess I should keep a spare house key in my car ‘just in case’ or maybe purchase one of those key holder rocks and put the rock in our bushes, that’s always a good idea, too. Right now, I have all my keys on one keyring and I pray to never get locked out of any where, you know? I pray! Hee-hee-hee-hee! =)
