Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.
Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.
Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!
My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!
The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!
One Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Kwikset SmartKey prize pack that includes:
- Your choice of a Arlington handleset, Tustin lever or Juno knob
- SmartCode Signature Series Keyless Deadbolt

Yippee! I *just* told my husband last night that I wanted to get this kind of lock for our house. (I have a very similar story of locking our infant daughter in our church while I was stuck outside on a 95° day because I misplaced my keys.)
How do I manage my keys? Well, we keep a spare key hanging up outside, unless I forget to return it to its proper spot. I’ve been known to climb through unlocked windows in our house at 9-months-pregnant because I’ve misplaced keys. *sigh*

We manage our house keys by giving everyone their own set of keys.

Before my husband and I leave the house, we always make sure we bring our front door key in case the garage door opener decides not to work one day. My husband’s keychain is full of keys, which always makes so much noise when he has them in his pockets. One less key would be great! I’d love to win this! It would so useful for us.

My husband and I each keep a housekey on our keychains, but he doesn’t take his with him when he rides his bike to work (travels lightly)….so if I’m not home when he gets home, that creates a problem!

I keep the key on my car keys. If I got locked out, my sister in law has our spare key.

We are pathetic … one house key on the keyring. The other was in the ashtray of our vehicle … something leaked into the tray and permanently fossilized the key to the car. Not much help if we get locked out!! (The 3 year old locked Daddy out the other day when he took the trash to the curb and I was gone with the car!! He did a lot of begging through the front window, in his pj’s!)

My mom and brother both have spare keys and live within 15 minutes.

We have a regular lock and key for our front door, but for our backdoor we have a lock that reads our fingerprints. It has saved me quite a few times from incidents like yours! =)

Husband and I each carry a key. We have a garage door keypad.

Oh, I hate keys! I have started to color code them. I have a hawiian print for the house. Silver means it is my classroom key. The gold one belongs to my mom’s house…

We haven’t devised a really useful solution to being locked out of the house yet; this would really help!
