Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?

As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.

Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.

Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!

My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!

The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!

    The keys are always a huge problem around our house. I really haven’t found a good way to manage them yet.

    Just a normal key on my keyring for the the front door, but the PIN keypad on the garage door has saved me more than once!

    as soon as I signed up for the kwik set giveaway, I recieved 60 emails in a 15 minute period this morning, and they all contain new people posting under comments for the kwik set giveaway. How weird is that?! Has anyone else experienced this?

    My car key and house key are on the same ring by themselves. Just in case we have a lock with a keypad entry on our garage and a spare key hidden in the garage so that we can get into the house. We did this because before we had kids we managed to lock ourselves out of the house with one dog and no leash while the other dog was still inside. Now that we have kids I’m a bit paranoid about locking them in or me out.

    I have two sets of keys so incase I lose one or lock one in my car I have an extra set in my house.

    Hubby and I each have one on our car keys, that is it. We use the number pad on the garage door alternately.

    I would LOVE LOVE LOVE one of these for our storage area. It is attached to our home in the back, but not accessible from inside. Hubby stores his commercial painting supplies there, but it must be locked always due to my child car regs. It would be awesome to have a keyless back there so he does not have to worry about having keys when he runs back for supplies during the day!

    We try the best we can to manage keys, but I am notorious for losing keys/locking keys in the car. This would be awesome!
