Great, thanks for taking the time to assemble this great list. I recently started Coverdell Educational Savings Accounts for our two daughters. Looks like this upromise program may really help supplement our savings if we “play our cards right”.

I’ve just started using them recently. We opened our upromise account back when I was pregnant with #1. Now we have a 7 month old #3 and I have been slacking tremendously on the account. Back to saving so we don’t have to shell out 2 arms and legs for 3 college tuitions!

My understanding is that with epromise you only save for college if you have children and you do not get any amount taken off your bill. Is that correct?

    SG-

The coupon is not physically taken off your bill, but rather stored in your upromise account, that is correct. It’s a quick way to save that tuition money because it’s like getting the coupon off in the long run when you have it to apply towards the tuition years down the road.
The savings in your upromise account is used for college– it can be for your children or for yourself. I’ve also seen that you can cash it out, but I don’t know the specifics on that.

I have over $400 in my Upromise account, I used to use it for all my online shopping. I started it back in 2002 I believe and did not have any kids yet. When my son came along and we started looking into college savings plans for him we realized they don’t sponsor all states. We are in Florida and that is one they don’t sponsor. I know we can open savings plans in other states, but honestly it was confusing enough for us just opening the Prepaid College Plan here in FL, so I didn’t even attempt to try to open one in a state they sponsor. I am not sure if we can cash it out or not as I have not seen anything about that on the website. I am going to try to find a phone number for them and call them now to see what I can do with the money in the account. Will let you know if cashing out is an option.

I just got off the phone with them and you can request a cash out. You have to fill out the form and mail it to them. They will send you a check within 12 weeks for the amount you request from your available balance, does not include pending amounts. Cool.

It’s true — I have requested that they send me a check before using the form on their website (it’s called “Upromise Rewards Withdrawal Request”), and it was easy and effective! The form was a pdf that I printed out and mailed to them. It says on the form that you have to get it notarized if the amount you are requesting is more than $200, which seems annoying, but worth it for that amount of money!

I submitted the form by fax and the amount is now more than $300 has to be notarized. So I just requested $300 for now and will keep the rest in there to build up again. It is nice because we only pay $100 a month for our sons prepaid college plan and this will cover 3 months, yippie!
