Taste of Italy Giveaway: Crisco Olive Oil Prize Package

March 28, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski

Huh – did you say Crisco Olive Oil?

Crisco certainly isn’t the first brand that comes to my mind when I think “olive oil,” so I’m assuming it’s the same for you all. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s actually quite good. I’ve been successfully substituting it for my more expensive olive oils over the past few weeks.

Here’s just one example of the tasty recipes that you can create with it.

Mediterranean Salad

mediterranean-salad

Salad:
1 pint grape tomatoes (use a mixture of red and yellow for added interest), halved
1 6-ounce container Bocconcini (small fresh mozzarella balls), drained
1 paper thin slice proscuitto ham, finely chopped
1/3 cup pitted kalamata olives, drained
1 tablespoon capers, drained

Dressing:
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Pinch of sugar
3/4 cup Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano

Place the grape tomatoes, bocconcini, proscuitto, olives and capers in a large bowl; set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together the white wine vinegar, mustard, black pepper and sugar. Slowly add the Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil in a steady stream, whisking while pouring; whisk until dressing is well blended. Whisk in the chives and oregano. Pour dressing over salad; gently toss to combine. Refrigerate, covered, several hours or overnight to allow flavors to develop, stirring occasionally. Season with additional black pepper if desired. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the tomato mixture to a serving bowl. Garnish with fresh oregano sprigs, if desired. Serve.

Yummy!

I use it for just about everything you’d use oil for except making popcorn (I use canola oil for that) or frying. I use it in salad dressings, to saute in, to roast veggies in and as an ingredient in recipes.

Our family uses olive oil with a variety of seasonings on the table at every meal to use as a dipping sauce for breads and veggies. Just about all the food I prepare has olive oil in it.

I use olive oil in all of my cooking…including frying. It takes a lot less oil, and crisps things up lighter. We also put it on our pasta, use it to roast potatoes and vegetables in the oven, and experiment with it in recipes. Our latest find is a Truffle Olive Oil that is just delicious! I would love to win this prize. [email protected]

We use it almost daily in cooking. My favorite way is to cut up yams and shake them with some olive oil and then broil them for “Sweet Fries”

I use olive oil for everything. I cook a variety of meals, from mexican food to Italian and all require oil. Olive oil gives gorditas and quesadillas a special flavor when you season the outside with salt and olive oil. Salads with olive oil and vinegar a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar is fantastic!!!!!! I would love to win this!!!

I use olive oil in place of vegetable oil whenever I am cooking on the stove. I also like to put olive oil in my spaghetti, because it keeps it from sticking together. Nothing worse than sticky spaghetti! I loved some of the other ideas. Thanks!

We LOVE olive oil in our house! You will most commonly see it with a bit of black pepper, red pepper flakes, and Parmesan served with a yummy crusty bread! We also use it for any stovetop cooking that calls for an oil! Love it!
