Taste of Italy Giveaway: Crisco Olive Oil Prize Package

March 28, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski

Huh – did you say Crisco Olive Oil?

Crisco certainly isn’t the first brand that comes to my mind when I think “olive oil,” so I’m assuming it’s the same for you all. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s actually quite good. I’ve been successfully substituting it for my more expensive olive oils over the past few weeks.

Here’s just one example of the tasty recipes that you can create with it.

Mediterranean Salad

mediterranean-salad

Salad:
1 pint grape tomatoes (use a mixture of red and yellow for added interest), halved
1 6-ounce container Bocconcini (small fresh mozzarella balls), drained
1 paper thin slice proscuitto ham, finely chopped
1/3 cup pitted kalamata olives, drained
1 tablespoon capers, drained

Dressing:
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Pinch of sugar
3/4 cup Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano

Place the grape tomatoes, bocconcini, proscuitto, olives and capers in a large bowl; set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together the white wine vinegar, mustard, black pepper and sugar. Slowly add the Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil in a steady stream, whisking while pouring; whisk until dressing is well blended. Whisk in the chives and oregano. Pour dressing over salad; gently toss to combine. Refrigerate, covered, several hours or overnight to allow flavors to develop, stirring occasionally. Season with additional black pepper if desired. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the tomato mixture to a serving bowl. Garnish with fresh oregano sprigs, if desired. Serve.

Yummy!

I teach nutrition so it is very important for me to practice what I preach! Because olive oil is one of the healthiest oils we have, I use it in everything. Just adding a touch to food gives us a good source of healthy fats that we so desperately need! It’s always in front of my cupboard!

I love to use olive oil in everything! I roast veggies with it, I make salad dressings with it, I even use it to make a dip for bread or veggies! I’m already subscribed to your blog. I just have to say, I first read your blog when you had the VS free bag. I read some post that weren’t too positive, but I decided to read you either way and judge for myself. You are AWESOME! Seriously your blog has now become one of my favorite blogs, and I read it everyday. Keep up the great work!

I like olive oil also for making veggie burgers, if I can’t grill them, I make them on the stove top with olive oil.

I use olive oil in just about everything. It is great for microwave popcorn. Just place 1/4 cup popcorn in a paper lunch sack, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and staple bag shut. Microwave for about 2&1/2 minuets (or until popping stops). It is much better than greassy vegetable oil.

For QUICK ‘grilled’ onions, put sliced onions in large microwavable bowl, add a few tablespoons of olive oil and zap at 75% power for a minute or until soft. Great on steaks, chops, etc!

olive oil is something that is out of our budget for a long time- however- drizzle it on something at the end of ccoking time for flavor and cook in vegetable oil to save!
