Taste of Italy Giveaway: Crisco Olive Oil Prize Package

March 28, 2009 by Tara Kuczykowski

Huh – did you say Crisco Olive Oil?

Crisco certainly isn’t the first brand that comes to my mind when I think “olive oil,” so I’m assuming it’s the same for you all. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s actually quite good. I’ve been successfully substituting it for my more expensive olive oils over the past few weeks.

Here’s just one example of the tasty recipes that you can create with it.

Mediterranean Salad

mediterranean-salad

Salad:
1 pint grape tomatoes (use a mixture of red and yellow for added interest), halved
1 6-ounce container Bocconcini (small fresh mozzarella balls), drained
1 paper thin slice proscuitto ham, finely chopped
1/3 cup pitted kalamata olives, drained
1 tablespoon capers, drained

Dressing:
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Pinch of sugar
3/4 cup Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano

Place the grape tomatoes, bocconcini, proscuitto, olives and capers in a large bowl; set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together the white wine vinegar, mustard, black pepper and sugar. Slowly add the Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil in a steady stream, whisking while pouring; whisk until dressing is well blended. Whisk in the chives and oregano. Pour dressing over salad; gently toss to combine. Refrigerate, covered, several hours or overnight to allow flavors to develop, stirring occasionally. Season with additional black pepper if desired. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the tomato mixture to a serving bowl. Garnish with fresh oregano sprigs, if desired. Serve.

Yummy!

We use olive oil in almost everything we cook. Not only is it good for my family, it makes the food tastes so much better than just plain old butter!

I use olive oil in my vinagrette AND I’ve found that I can use it in sweets. What I do is use the light olive oil because I find the olive flavor is not strong. If you have a sweet recipe that has its own strong flavor, you can even use extra virgin.

I use olive oil in nearly all of my cooking……I’ve not tried it in baking, but I know that many people do and say that it tastes great! It’s especially good in recipes such as Shrimp Scampi and in sauces…..

I use Olive oil in place of butter on most things. I use it in place of other oils in most cases, too. There are excetions where you can not substitute, but anywhere I can I do. Never use olive oil in baking mixes.

I use it for sauteing things and for potatoes roasted in the oven with rosemary etc.. I haven’t tried it in baked goods. For that I generally use canola oil. Winning this would be a great way to try Crisco’s olive oil. A good giveaway.

Just like many others, I use olive oil in, and on, everything and stopped using butter and margarine in my house in the interests of being more ‘healthy.’ I can’t wait to look for Crisco olive oil locally as the only downside to using olive oil is the cost. Thanks for another great giveaway!

We love olive oil. We try to have a fresh salad every night for dinner. We put olive oil, a little pepper, and a little garlic salt on our salad and it’s delicious.

    Here’s a recipe I love to make
Pan Bagnat (sandwiches I adapted from Weight Watchers cookbook)
    1 day old baguette
    1 tomato
    1/4 c shredded cheese
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1 tbsp olive oil
    2 tbsp salad style vinegar
Slice bread in half long way, rip out the soft insides of the bread. Chop tomato; mix bread pieces, tomato, onion powder, oil, and vinegar in bowl. Spoon mixture back into “bread boat”. Broil on low heat for about 4 mintues or till lightly browned.
