That IS illegal. Please don’t do it. That is part of the reason cashiers can be so nasty to couponers, they think we are stealing from them or committing fraud, which is what copying is…fraud.

That is very illegal, and things like that make manufacturer’s stop issuing online coupons as well as stores not accepting coupons.
My local stores still accept online coupons for now… but they’ve since quit taking “free product” online coupons because of the fraud.
Saving a few extra dollars here and there aren’t worth the end result– not being allowed to use ANY online coupons ANYWHERE.
Please, be honest and use the ONE coupon that was issued to you through your e-mail. If you need more than one, then use more than one computer. Simple as that.

I agree. My Kroger will no longer accept internet printed coupons above $1 in value for this exact reason. The manager explained it to me once when I was trying to use a $3 printed coupon on Kroger diapers. She graciously allowed me to use the coupon since I had printed it months prior when they didn’t yet have that rule, but I am no longer able to use valid internet coupons over $1 because of past coupon fraud such as photocopied coupons.

When you read the eBay auctions and coupon clipping sites, you’ll notice that they say you’re not paying for the coupons — you’re paying for their time to clip, sort, ship, etc. It’s not necessarily illegal. I believe they’re more concerned about counterfit rings and people stores that are redeeming coupons that people haven’t actually used (because stores have been found guilty of coupon fraud too).

It’s okay, Jeni! It’s a common mistake for people new to couponing, and we are always just trying to educate people as best as we can. It’s the people that do it knowingly that hurt us all though.

I have a follow-on question to the coupon-purchasing sites. If the sites are actually selling for their time to cut out a coupon, then why don’t all the coupons cost the same amount? It doesn’t take any more time to cut out one coupon than it does another, but each coupon available for purchase is available for a different amount, with the higher-dollar amounts costing more oftentimes. I haven’t tried purchasing any coupons, but I perused several sites. Still a little skeptical about the validity of that… Thanks!

Tara, is there anyplace on your website where we can go to post actual store experiences using coupons? Our local Albertsons is actually refusing to take mfg coupons! They’ve said they will only take 3 of any type of ANY coupon, even if those coupons come from a newspaper or magazine! That means that anyone buying coupons from e-Bay or other service (and who of us hasn’t) risk paying good money for coupons they can’t use. Our local Target store has refused to accept many coupons because, according to them, “too many people are using them.” I think that may be why many stores are getting stricter–n0t because of fraud but because of the time it takes to process all the additional coupons. What do you think?

That’s very frustrating, Terri! You could either leave a comment in one of the posts on a particular store, or if you’d like, you could start a thread in the forums. I know many of the stores have reps that frequent both areas, so hopefully they will read and look into the issue.

Some of the cashiers at my King Soopers (Kroger in Colorado) are telling me the same thing–no more than 3 coupons of the same kind, regardless where they orginated from. I asked if that would be the rule when a manufacturer had a special sale, like buy 5 for 10 and get 5 back, or any such stock up sale —the answer was 3 and only 3 coupons firmly.
I also encountered problems at one of the Safeway’s I frequent while using the LaVicRewards coupon 2/$4.00. I had to prove to the manager by showing him the “LaVicRewards” logo and the printed website on the coupon, then reference to the rewards program on the bottles of salsa. He stated that many stores are putting a $1.00 limit on coupons, and anything valued over has to be OKd by management in hopes that it will intimidate fraudulant shoppers.

Just so you all know, I agree with Tara regarding the coupon clipping sites. I posted the link just to educate people about coupon copying.
Harris Teeter also limits the same coupon to three in one transaction. I think part of the reason is that they don’t want people in clearing the shelves of the rock bottom deals.
BTW, stores actually do quite well redeeming coupons. Have you ever noticed that the fine print says they will also be reimbursed for the face value of the coupon plus an $0.08 handling fee? That’s an extra $0.08 per coupon. But, coupons have to be valid for a store to get their money back- not copied, for the correct product and not expired.
Who knew there was so much to know about a coupon?

I wish our local Kroger’s allowed us to use printable coupons anymore. They don’t–at all–and are getting close to clipped coupons being cut too. Of course, they could be a little more cordial and not have told me this after my checkout was rung up. You ladies in places where you can still use printables, feel blessed. I can only use them at Bigg’s and sometimes…it is just not a good enough deal to bother.

My local Walmart last week wouldn’t take 2 coupons just a like that said on it “one coupon per purchase”. I tried to argue that I had one item per coupon and each was a purchase. That if they didn’t want me to use more than one coupon then it would say “one per transaction”. They didn’t see it that way. GRRRR!

Tara, I went to your Forums page but nowhere was there a link to leave comments about store experiences like those we’ve had above. How about adding a new category with that title so we can all leave comments about stores in our given areas–it could save many of us a lot of grief if we knew beforehand, and it could give the stores a heads up that a whole lot of us are really unhappy about their policies and restrictions. Whadda ya think?

Vicki I agree about the transaction thing. It is important that the STORE understand the language on the coupon. There should be laws regarding this, … maybe there are. I went to a Hallmark (& Bible) once and tried to use the christmas time $5 off any purchase and wanted to buy a TY beanie (sold at most Hallmarks!!) and the manager said I couldn’t because THAT STORE decided it could only be used on Hallmark brand items because they sold other stuff regular hallmarks didn’t sell (& Bible part). Well, that was their choice (and hallmark’s who MADE the coupon) to be a & Bible store and they weren’t following the coupon which did NOT*** state any restrictions on items – could be used WITH sale on ANY item, not ONLY hallmark. I used it in on non-hallmark items at other regular hallmark stores. Also, privately owned Hallmarks put plenty of unique stuff in their store’s that other hallmarks don’t have. I called corporate and they couldn’t do ANYTHING because they couldn’t find the coupon in their registrar or whatever, bullcrap. soo pissed.

I am new to this couponing thing and I have made copies of coupons before, because I honestly did not know. and now that I’ve educated myself on this I stopped immediately, I threw out all my internet coupons infact. I am actually scared because I have used a few copied coupons at walmart, walgreens, and vons. should i be concern? Or is there something i can do to avoid any legal damages? I feel so terrible and awful even if it was 5-10 bucks. I really had no intentions of making the stores loose money honest, i thought it was a good deal getting 1.00 off juice and now i feel so much guilt, i don’t even know what to do.
