A few weeks ago I shared that my family was participating in the Listerine Oral Care Challenge to promote better oral care habits for the entire family. I have to admit this was a bit of a tough challenge for us, but we made a lot of progress overall.
It seemed like the mouth rinse was a big hit and the easiest habit to maintain — as evidenced by the additional cleaning of the faucets, mirrors and sinks I’ve had to do in the bathrooms. But that’s a small price to pay for a healthier mouth! The flossing was a tougher sell because none of my kids are really old enough and coordinated enough to do it themselves, yet they’re old enough that they really don’t want Mom messing around in their mouths too much. We’ll continue to work on this area…
But the biggest success of the challenge was just getting them focused on brushing more often and being more aware of the concept of better oral care habits as a whole and why they’re important. The Listerine Oral Care Challenge gave us the tools to talk about why brushing alone isn’t enough and inspired them to want to take better care in brushing, rinsing and flossing — ensuring that they maintain these gorgeous smiles that I love!

The habits we instill in our children while they’re still young and usually habits that will last a lifetime, so I’d encourage you all to give this a try with your kids. Listerine has some useful information and printable tip sheets available that I would definitely recommend checking out!

We started brushing young, we use a timer and I allow the kids to brush by themselves in the morning and with help in the evening.

I think letting children pick our their own toothbrush at the store is a big help in getting them to cooperate during teeth brushing. I also think it’s great when they see their parents brush/floss/rinse.

My kids love the cute character themed brushes with the “motors.” Those are good motivation for extra brushing!!

I let my son choose his toothbrush and tooth paste. And if the store we are shopping at has different options for mouthwash he gets to choose that too. The more involved he is in the process, the more he will want to participate in the actual brushing! bekki1820cb at gmail dot com

I am passing on the tip our dentist gives us at every visit. Use a two minute timer and brush in front of a mirror -don’t wander around while brushing. He claims that if one looks in the mirror while brushing, they brush more effectively.

I have always believed that as a parent, I set the example. So I dont just tell my kids to brush, I brush with them. I show them how try to reach all my teeth, brush the tongue and finish with mouthwash. I try to make it fun by buying fun colored tooth brushes and mouthwashes. So far Spongebob and Phineus are the faves.

DDs are always happy to pick up their own brushes and flavored toothpastes. This is how I encourage them to engage in healthy oral care habits.
