A few weeks ago I shared that my family was participating in the Listerine Oral Care Challenge to promote better oral care habits for the entire family. I have to admit this was a bit of a tough challenge for us, but we made a lot of progress overall.
It seemed like the mouth rinse was a big hit and the easiest habit to maintain — as evidenced by the additional cleaning of the faucets, mirrors and sinks I’ve had to do in the bathrooms. But that’s a small price to pay for a healthier mouth! The flossing was a tougher sell because none of my kids are really old enough and coordinated enough to do it themselves, yet they’re old enough that they really don’t want Mom messing around in their mouths too much. We’ll continue to work on this area…
But the biggest success of the challenge was just getting them focused on brushing more often and being more aware of the concept of better oral care habits as a whole and why they’re important. The Listerine Oral Care Challenge gave us the tools to talk about why brushing alone isn’t enough and inspired them to want to take better care in brushing, rinsing and flossing — ensuring that they maintain these gorgeous smiles that I love!

The habits we instill in our children while they’re still young and usually habits that will last a lifetime, so I’d encourage you all to give this a try with your kids. Listerine has some useful information and printable tip sheets available that I would definitely recommend checking out!

My family is easily convinced to have good oral health care because we have started our children off at a young age with the idea and we stress the best way to make dental visits easier is by taking good care of our teeth every day, and my making healthy dietary choices for our teeth.

We post a monthly oral care chart on the inside of our bathroom mirror for each of our family members. We have a box for each day of the week for brushing and flossing. Each night before we go to bed, we check the chart and we can only fill in the daily box if we brushed at least twice and if we flossed that day. It has become a good habit for us now.

My daughter is still young, but she already knows that she needs to brush her teeth before taking a bath or going to bed.

I actually brush all of my children’s teeth including my 9-year old’s and they all have to floss every night as well. I believe it’s a big reason they are still cavity free.

I try to make it fun, and by setting a good example.
