A few weeks ago I shared that my family was participating in the Listerine Oral Care Challenge to promote better oral care habits for the entire family. I have to admit this was a bit of a tough challenge for us, but we made a lot of progress overall.
It seemed like the mouth rinse was a big hit and the easiest habit to maintain — as evidenced by the additional cleaning of the faucets, mirrors and sinks I’ve had to do in the bathrooms. But that’s a small price to pay for a healthier mouth! The flossing was a tougher sell because none of my kids are really old enough and coordinated enough to do it themselves, yet they’re old enough that they really don’t want Mom messing around in their mouths too much. We’ll continue to work on this area…
But the biggest success of the challenge was just getting them focused on brushing more often and being more aware of the concept of better oral care habits as a whole and why they’re important. The Listerine Oral Care Challenge gave us the tools to talk about why brushing alone isn’t enough and inspired them to want to take better care in brushing, rinsing and flossing — ensuring that they maintain these gorgeous smiles that I love!

The habits we instill in our children while they’re still young and usually habits that will last a lifetime, so I’d encourage you all to give this a try with your kids. Listerine has some useful information and printable tip sheets available that I would definitely recommend checking out!

We brush and clean together in the morning and at night. Doing it as a family has helped my kids understand it is necessary and important to take care of our teeth and gums.

We brush and floss our teeth together every day.

Everybody gets to pick out their toothbrush(es) and mouthwashes at the store. That seems to keep them interested in brushing.

I always emphasized how important it was to brush their teeth so they wouldn’t get cavities & have to go to the dentist to get the cavity filled. It worked! All 3 have never had a cavity! LOL. I might have put the fear of god in them, but they always loved our dentist & were never afraid of them.

I only have a 2 yr old. I watch what he eats and drinks. Nobody goes to bed without brushing. He loves his dentist so we play dentist when I brush his teeth.

I believe as parents we have to set a good example for our children. If they see us brushing and flossing they will want to copy us.

I have a chore chart for my kids and if they brush both nights and mornings all all week, they automatically get a bonus dollar. I have them use the placker flossers each day, they like them and therefore use them.

I’m just completely honest with my family about the fact that we don’t have dental insurance. Dental work costs money. And every cavity, every filling, every extra visit takes money away from the fun things we could do! They get it!
