BIG Giveaway: $500 Walmart Gift Card Sponsored by Nickelodeon

December 2, 2008 by Tara Kuczykowski

Nickelodeon
I’ve hinted about it for days now, and finally here it is – your chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card!!!

walmart-500-gift-cardJust in time to make your holidays a little happier, Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer this fabulous contest hosted by the Elevenmoms.

Yep, that’s right – each Elevenmom is giving away one $500 gift card on her blog, so you have 20 chances to win! Find details on the Elevenmoms site on how you can enter to win each one. Please note that you may only win once.

So who wants to add $500 to their holiday budget? You didn’t really think I was going to make this EASY for you, did you? You’re going to have to work a little bit for a prize this big.

In light of the tough economic times, this contest is all about discovering new ways to help each other save money. Yesterday I wrote a post detailing seven easy ways to cut at least $1 from your budget per day in the hopes that it would inspire you to participate in The One Dollar Give. I only just scratched the surface though, and I know that you all have some amazing tips to share as well.

So there you go – holiday-themed or not, I want you to share your best methods for cutting back by at least $1 a day!

Methods of Entry*

Every reader can submit up to three (3) different tips to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!

YOU MUST LEAVE A TIP WITH EACH ENTRY. ENTRIES THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES BELOW WILL BE DELETED.

1. Leave a comment sharing your best money-saving tip to cut at least $1 a day out of your budget!

2. Subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment letting me know you have done so along with another money-saving tip. If you’re already a subscriber, simply leave a separate comment letting me know you’re already subscribed along with another money-saving tip. Lovin’ my subscribers! You guys make this all possible.

3. Spread the word about this contest in some manner and come back and leave a link in a separate comment along with another money-saving tip. If you have a blog, you can blog about it. But if you don’t have a blog, you’re not at a disadvantage. You could review and Stumble it. You could Twitter it. You could post about it in a forum. Use your imagination!

*Please read the rules for entering and the timeline information carefully as this contest differs from the usual giveaways that I host.

It is important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment is equal to one entry. Sorry to harp on this, but it really is that important to tally and select the winner easily, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me simplify the process!

Prize:
1 $500 Walmart Gift Card

This giveaway ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, December 15th. The judges will select ten of their favorite entries to be highlighted on Deal Seeking Mom, and I’ll use Random.org to select the winning comment.  The winner will be posted on Tuesday, December 16th, and the prize will be mailed out on December 17th. Good luck!

While you’re in a contest entering mood, don’t forget to check out the Giveaway Gathering for a variety of contests being hosted on Deal Seeking Mom readers’ blogs!

Tip #3: Sign up with FreeCycle. I haven’t needed to buy clothes for my children for two years – whenever they outgrow their current clothes I simply post a “wanted” on FreeCycle asking for the next size up. There is always someone who has kids clothes that aren’t needed anymore!

We use towels at mealtime instead of napkins to save $$ and also lowered the setting on our themostat from 70 to 68 (65 when I’m home by myself during the day – I just put on a sweatshirt!)

This week I have saved more than $1 a day by simply being very creative with what I have. My daughter was put in a harness for hip dysplasia and I was given a list of all the things that would help dress her as clothing has to go over top of the harness. Rather than run out and buy everything on the list (as tempting as that was) I washed all my hand me downs from my older daughter and went through them. The only thing I needed are some warmer swaddling blankets, which my MIL is making.

Sometimes we get overwhelmed and don’t stop to think and look around at what we have.

I needed a book case – I am using my daughter’s armoire for her books instead.

I need baskets for books – I am covering appropriately sized boxes with fabric I already have, some of which is old sheets.

the best tip I have is to just stop and think creatively.

A trick I learned for mirrors when I ran out of glass cleaner. If you mist the mirror very lightly with plain tap water, then use a soft washcloth and elbow grease, you get a better shine than using glass cleaner – AND it is f.r.e.e. Plus, you don’t have a chemical odor after you’re done.

I work in an office environment and we find ourselves ordering out for lunch on an almost daily basis. My order usually included a large sweet tea which on average cost me about $1.50 every day. I stopped ordering tea and started drinking a cup of water instead. Not only did I save money every day but I noticed a bit of weight loss from the reduction of sugar intake.

Tip #2: We don’t buy baby wipes, instead we use baby wash cloths to clean a baby bottom when changing diapers. We do this even when we go out. We will wet several baby wash cloths, put them in a ziploc bag, add a drop or two of baby oil, squish the cloths inside the bag to soak up the extra oil and water and we’re out the door. We carry an extra bag to put the used cloths in and toss them in the laundry when we get home.

I make my own hot chocolate in the morning before work, that way when everyone goes out for coffee I don’t need to spend any money.

For me, cut my bad habit of stopping in at sonic during happy hour!! I also always plan for being at home for lunch – it just costs to much for eating fast food – even if it is just my three year old and me!!

Stop buying soda or water in 20 oz bottles for 1.39. I don’t do it everyday, but I do it often enough that it would make a difference.

Don’t buy coffee drinks!!! Make it at home!!! This will save you more then $1 a day!!! Also look at your utility bills and see what you can cut back on. Do you really need a home phone when you have a cell phone?? Or are you really using all the cell phone minutes you have or could you get a smaller plan!! etc.

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
