Fantastic news for those of you that have been having various issues with coupons at Target. The Target corporate coupon policy is now available online!
Target Stores Coupon Policy
Coupons are a great way to save even more when shopping with us, and it’s easy to use them at our stores.
- Target accepts one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item (unless prohibited)
- Super Target coupons can be used in any Target store if the store carries the item
- We gladly accept valid internet coupons
Because of the variety of coupons available to our guests, we do have some guidelines for how coupons can be redeemed at Target.
When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:
- We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued coupons and manufacturer-issued.
- We’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
- Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
- We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
- We can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
- All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.
This policy clearly states the official stance on many of the issues that have been reported to me recently. I would encourage you to print a copy and keep it with your coupons to present at the register should you have any future issues.
Thanks, Krazy Coupon Lady!

Target USED to be my favorite place to shop…not anymore. Today I tried to use a $2/3 Tide – no size restrictions. I purchased 3 trial sizes at .97 each (2.91 total) and they refused to accept my coupon. They told me it had to be the “big” sizes. I informed them the coupon didn’t have a size restriction. They still said no. Then I purchased a 9.99 Transformer toy. After having some trouble, my $5 target mobile coupon scanned. Then I tried to use a $5 manufacturer coupon. The cashier refused to accept it “because it’s more than the item itself”. I asked if she would adjust it down to 4.99. Her reply, “I can’t.” I asked to speak with a manager. Not one but TWO managers said I wasn’t allowed to use the Tide or Transformers coupons. Then they dropped a bomb…”You’re actually only allowed 4 manufacturer coupons and 4 target coupons in 1 transaction.” Not 4 LIKE coupons – 4 coupons for your whole transaction. So, if you have 20 different items, you’re only allowed 4 manufacturer and 4 target coupons!

While Target is throwing around there “coupon policy” I wonder if they adjust the amount they recieve from the manufacturer when they do not give the customer the full coupon amount, I would guess not. While we are on the subject coupons are repaid to by the person who issued them. No one is out any money.

Here in Alaska, we have to drive anywhere from 5 to 20 miles to “go to town” (unless you live in a more populated area then it could be 2-5 miles) so many people do go store to store to get the very best deals. Many of the sale items listed on this site (as well as others), I can bet on adding .20 to .60 to every item (Medicines are 1 – 5.00 more), no doubling/tripling and our items go up as gas goes up. Being a single mom of 3 kids on a limited budget, I have saved ~900.00 in the last 4 months of couponing and sales being able to give my family things when they need it and doing splurge things like bowling or swimming instead of waiting until we have the money which could easily be 3-4 months down the road after bills are paid. So couponing is especially important to save whenever, wherever I can. With that said, and after reading through all the responses re Target policy, I do have to say I LOVE my local Target! The cashiers here are very knowledgeable on their policies, polite, encouraging and have a very low turn over rate (compared to other local stores). I always do multiple transactions if I am buying more than one of the same item – I have never been told customers are limited on transaction amounts, can’t use a coupon if it exceeds the item price or limited in using Target coupons. The only “problem” I have had is a young csm ready for a break roll her eyes price matching with Walmart a couple months ago …..Scrub bubble Toilet cleaner starter kit on sale for 9.99 there and if you bought a refill (2.99 on sale) you received a 5.00 gift card so after price matching (at Walmart it was 5.59) and a couple nice coupons (5/1 starter kit, 2/1 on refill) I paid 1.75 (after tax) so I made 3.25 (after the gift card) which normally would of cost me 13.24 – 7q’s = 6.24 – 5 gc = 1.24. She asked if I had more coupons, I had 3 more, so she sent someone to go get more (one for each neighbor in my 4 plex) and redid the transaction not believing the deal, called over a couple other csm’s on duty to check it out and asked where she could get some coupons lol Now when I go in the ones that recognize me, ask what’s my plan and watch for themselves to see how they can save money too like yesterday my total amount was 4.63 (babysoft lip – 3.29 and first aid kit – 1.37) and I got it down to 0.68 after tax and coupons….I redid this deal 7 times and still have .24 left on one of the 5.00 gift cards from the scrub bubbles deal – you may think this is hoarding but with Christmas coming up and 9 families to get gifts for not including my own (1 large gift basket per family) my total out of pocket is 45.90 ($5 per family after gift cards and coupons) instead of 73.44 (18 x $4 per person) saving 27.54 and they get things the whole family can all use instead of whatever item is cheapest at the moment. I did feel a bit guilty but not as guilty as looking into my kids eyes and telling them not this month

I am also a Target employee and I just thought I would weigh in on this debate. The first thing is we get updates to the coupon policy frequently and not always on the same date or at the beginning of the month, so you might come one day and three days later something might have changed. As far as the bogo and cents off coupons go I think that might be up to an individuals interpretation to me if both coupons are manufac or store then I would not except them on the same item because to me that is double dipping. On the other hand I do accept coupons for trial sizes if the coupon doesnt state that you can’t take them for that. If Target doesn’t want you to use them for trial sizes then they need to state that on the coupon. But sometimes we do limit quantaties per our managements instructions. I can tell the difference between a coupon printed in black and white and one that has been photocopied which is not acceptable. The registers sometimes reject coupons that are valid but the cashiers might be afraid to override it. But one thing I want to say is courtesy goes both ways. Please don’t come up to me with a defensive attitude when you don’t even know yet what I’m going to do. Don’t tell me how to ring things up or how to take coupons, this is my job and I need to keep it so I will do what my managers have instructed me to do. I use coupons too, I am a human being too. I will gladly listen to what you have to say, but I may not always be able to do what you want. Its nothing against you and some of the things people are saying here are not correct. Like you have to bring back missed coupons the same day, sometimes it will let you bring them a few days later but there is no way to override that. I don’t personally care if you have alot of the same item as long as you have the coupon for it. But we have rules about how we are to ring things up like all applicable coupons are to be taken off prior to any price adjustments, if after coupons are deducted the price is the same or less than the ad match price we aren’t supposed to lower the price anymore. This is a written policy, and most cashiers don’t do it properly and people get really good deals like that but they don’t complain when policy is broken in their favor. I’m willing to work with anyone within the boundries of my job but just because you throw a fit and think your right doesn’t mean you are going to get your way.I hope you realize we are people too, and everyone makes mistakes.
