Yes, I know it’s probably a little early to be talking Christmas already — after all the kids did just start school — but I wanted to give you a quick update about Walmart’s Holiday Layaway program. It’s back a little early this year (starts September 16th!), albeit with a few key changes, so here’s what you can expect if you plan to utilize it for your holiday shopping.

— In addition to electronics, toys and jewelry, Walmart has added small home appliances and select sporting goods to the list of eligible layaway products.
— Individual items must be priced $15 or more, and the total basket must be at least $50. (same as last year)
— A down payment of 10 percent or $10, whichever is greater, is required when items are placed on Layaway. (same as last year)
— The Layaway open fee is $15, but if the customer pays in full they will receive it back on a Walmart gift card. Last year, a one-time non-refundable $5 service fee was charged.
— If the order is cancelled, the open fee is not refunded; however no additional cancellation fee will be charged. Last year, there is a $10 cancellation fee for any orders not picked up by that date or cancelled by the customer.

As I mentioned, layaway will be back 30 days early this year, giving you a whole additional month to pay for your holiday purchases! The layaway program officially starts on September 16th, but Walmart Facebook fans get early access. Simply like your local Walmart store, and you’ll receive a ticket via email that will allow you access to the layaway program on September 14th and 15th, two days earlier than the general public.

Walmart has worked with its suppliers to ensure the holiday season’s top electronics and toys are available in time for this mid-September layaway launch, and aim to ensure that customers get more Christmas for their money this holiday via their everyday low prices and Ad Match program.

Layaway isn’t a program we’ve used for our holiday shopping in the past, but as our kids are getting older and asking for fewer gifts that are typically more expensive, I’m thinking it might be a wise move to give it a try so we can pay over the course of several months. Also, they’re getting more and more curious, and we’re running out of hiding spots in our home!
