They are hoping to upsell you more make up. Taking the free item, lets them give you a demo and they try to sell you more make up. Just listen and tell them no.

I don’t approach them like that at my store. I just walk in and politely ask, “I have these cards, (usually I have about 4-5 of them at a time), do you have any of these samples left?”. Last weekend, I walked out with the free sample of the mineral makeup one, and because they were out of the rest, they gave me about five different perfume samples… I never had to do anything more than ask.
