why is it a better deal to get 4? shouldn’t the best deal be to buy 3?

You can also buy three, but since Target doesn’t give overage, you get the most bang for your buck if you can print four of the $0.75 off coupons and buy four packs at once.

If you buy three, then you miss out on 34¢ of overage:
      $2.97 (3 x 97¢) – $3.25 (3 x 75¢ coupon = $2.25 + $1/3 coupon) = $0.34 overage that Target doesn’t give you

If you buy four, then you miss out on 12¢ of overage, but get a fourth package of wipes:
      $3.88 (4 x 97¢) – $4.00 (4 x 75¢ coupon = $3.00 + $1/3 coupon) = $0.12 overage that Target doesn’t give you

One thing to note, my local Target had a policy that it would only accept the number of coupons equal to the number of items (meaning, I could only use a total of four coupons in a transaction for four packages of wipes, not five as suggested in the scenario). I have not checked recently to see if this policy is still in effect.

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
