Dear Dumb Diary The Musical Movie

September 8, 2013 by Tara Kuczykowski Leave a Comment

Although I’ve always been an avid reader, sadly not all of my children have followed in my footsteps. While my oldest son always has a book close at hand and often asks me for recommendations, my 10-year-old son often needs an extra nudge, although he did blow through the entire Diary of a Wimpy Kid series quite quickly.

My 9-year-old daughter is much like my 10-year-old son, and I’ve been searching for a similar series that might inspire her to read more. So when Walmart asked me if she might like to read the first Dear Dumb Diary book in anticipation of its adaptation into a musical movie experience exclusively for Walden Family Theater, I figured we’d give it a shot!

Camden’s a bit of a struggling reader and needs all the practice she can get, so we sat down to read it together. Overall, we found it a very enjoyable read and very appropriate for her reading level. She did have a bit of difficulty with some of the nonsense words, but the storyline drew her in and she was eager to find out what happened next after finishing each chapter.

The Dear Dumb Diary series is written like an actual diary of a 6th grade girl, Jamie Kelly, and details her day to day trials and tribulations. One of Camden’s favorite things about the book were the hilarious drawings sprinkled throughout. She’s not quite ready for solid pages of text, so this helped break up the pages and added a lot of color to the story.

After reading the book, Camden was really excited to watch the musical movie that just aired on the Hallmark Channel this past Friday night! Unfortunately, we missed the first airing, but never fear, it’s scheduled to air again this Friday, September 13th at 8pm EST. If you can’t wait until then, the DVD is available exclusively in stores at Walmart or on Walmart.com.

Did your family happen to catch the Dear Dumb Diary movie premier on Friday night?

Hey there — nice to meet you!

I'm Tara: mom of 5 teens/tweens and one 80-lb. Weimaraner, who fancies herself a lap dog. Born and raised in Ohio (GO BUCKS!!!), my fave things include cooking + baking, my JEEP Rubicon, the 4x4 beaches at OBX, and checking out the local craft beer scene...

As you can imagine, all of this puts a good dent in my monthly budget. So I've learned how to save on the things I NEED, so I can spend on the things I WANT.
