Help Deserving Teachers Via the Teachers Rock App

Did you have a teacher that inspired you? Mine was my third grade teacher — Sister Grace. Oh, she was tough as nails and had a knack for mortifying me in front of my class… but she also taught me a great deal about discipline and inspired my life-long love of reading.

I directly attribute my eighth grade citywide spelling bee championship win to her. Every Monday she sent home a list of vocabulary words for our spelling test that week. Only she didn’t hand us your ordinary average spelling test on Fridays. No, she would hand us a blank piece of paper and instruct us to write our list down from memory and in alphabetical order — pretty advanced stuff for third grade!

Teaching is a tough job and teachers deserve to be recognized for their hard work. Did you know that many teachers spend up to $500 of their own hard-earned money on supplies for their own classroom? Well, you can help without by submitting deserving teachers to be on the Walmart Teachers Hall of Fame. Between now and September 20, you can nominate an outstanding teacher to the Wall of Fame on the app, and each day, a nominee will be inducted and given a $500 gift card!

Tune into CBS Saturday evening at 8pm EST to view the Teachers Rock concert as well. This concert was held on August 14th, and the proceeds will benefit three non-profit organizations: DonorsChoose.org, Feeding America and Teach for America. The television event will feature taped performance and appearances from Carrie Underwood, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Garner, Matthew Morrison, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Usher, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine and James Valentine, and more.
