Redbox 101: Your Guide to Renting Free and Cheap DVDs

by Tara Kuczykowski on July 15, 2008 · 18 comments

By popular demand, here's how to use those Redbox free rental codes that I post every Monday! By the way, rentals are only $1 regularly, so this is a great resource for cheap entertainment even without a free rental code!

It really could not be easier. The first thing you should do is find your nearest Redbox using their Redbox kiosk search. From here's it's just three simple steps to redeem your free rental code:

  • Select "Rent with a Promo Code". You'll find this option on the opening touch screen in the lower left corner. Now enter your code, of course.
  • Select your movie. Redbox always has a great variety of choices. You're sure to find something appropriate for your family, and new releases are added every Tuesday. You can check out the current releases here.
  • Complete your transaction. You'll need to enter a credit card to check out, but you will not be charged unless you do not return your movie by 9:00 p.m. the following evening.

Speaking of returning movies, you can return them to any Redbox location! You need not return it to the specific location that you rented it from. They are always due back by the following evening at 9:00 p.m. The good news, however, is that you will never be charged a late fee. You will only be charged for another night's rental at the rate of $1. This is great for those of us with mommy brain that tend to forget about these things until about 8:59 p.m.

One of my favorite features is the ability to reserve your Redbox movies online ahead of time. How cool is that option?!? Unfortunately it cannot be used with the free rental codes at this time, but I'll be the first to shout out the news if they ever add it!

Be sure to check back here every Monday for the latest free rental code valid through midnight CST.

HOT TIP! – You can actually use them more than once. The trick is you will have to use a different credit card or debit card for each transaction.

Looking for a free rental code that can be used anytime? I suggest you check out Redbox Insider. They usually have several working codes listed at any given time!

You're welcome, and thanks to all of you that kept me on my toes. I don't know why I didn't think about posting a how-to sooner!

I just did this for the first time on Monday and it was soooo easy, but do you know if you can use the same credit card each Monday for a new movie or can the credit card # only be used one time only?

You sure can, Mary, because each Monday the code is different! You may only use a code once per card, though.

Monday codes can only be used on Mondays. In the month of August, there are also codes for Wednesdays.

Thank you, thank you for this information. I just found your blog last week and while I was at Walmart yesterday, I noticed the Red Box in front where the vending machines are and thought I've seen this before... Yea, now I'm ready to try it out... :):)

IT DOESNT WORK FOR BLACKBERRY VIA TMOBILE EITHER - I GOT A TEXT BACK FROM 414141 SAYING THAT IT IS UNAVAILABLE WITH MY SERVICE PLAN. I HAVE UNLIMITED TEXTS, SO I DONT UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE.

I have never had a code work for me...always says invalid code...but...still...it is cheap entertainment and ya can't go wrong for a buck. I would probably rent more of those I wasn't as interested in if the codes worked though.....

Here is an email I recently got regarding the redbox rentals:

As you may be aware, last month Redbox changed the way they are distributing their monthly first monday promo codes. Now they are only sent via text message to those signed up for their SMS network, and the codes are all unique so they cannot be shared.

If that wasn’t bad enough, things got worse today…

It looks like some glitch in the Redbox system has prevented codes from being sent to most subscribers, and those who are receiving text messages, are getting no codes at all, but just a nice blank message.
