Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.
Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.
Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!
My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!
The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!
One Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Kwikset SmartKey prize pack that includes:
- Your choice of a Arlington handleset, Tustin lever or Juno knob
- SmartCode Signature Series Keyless Deadbolt
To enter, tell me how you manage your house keys. Do you have multiple keys in case you get locked out? Do your children have keys to the home? Perhaps a neighbor keeps a spare key in case of emergencies.

I really should have something better in place, but I don’t so this would be a great item for me to win!

I have a key to the front door and a garage door opener. The door to the inside of the house is kept unlocked. My neighbor also has a key to our house so in the event that none of the above is available we go to them for the key. And this has happened on more than one occasion! My daughter is forever forgetting her key to the house and goes to them to let her in the house. I would LOVE to have the keypad!!
Thank you,
Cheri

Just have one key hidden in the breezeway but this would be great for the house we are building.
Asmith
no real key management we both have a key and a spare hidden.
Angie
We have a pin on the garage as well. I hate that feeling of unlocked kitchen doors. This would be great for my daughter, since she does not carry keys. Thanks for the chance.

No real key management here…but both my brothers have a copy of our house key and are local…I have been telling my husband we really need to get a deadbolt installed though, so this would be great to win.

we put one of those on our back door. my husband can’t keep track of his keys for anything. it’s been really handy for the kids though too.

House keys are just on a keyring and lately they are separated from my car keys, no real management, been lucky enough to not have to go through the window lately…;)

This reminds me that I need a spare! We both have a house key, but no spare anywhere. Just a few months ago, the kids and I had to use a crowbar…only the safety chain was locked, so the door opened a few inches. Thought I could pop the chain. Nope. Pulled an entire chunk of wood off the door frame that the lock was attached to! I think keyless entry would be very good!

I have a set of keys with me constantly as well as my husband. My best friend also has a spare “just in case”

no key management here, though we should hubby can’t find his!

I have a keypad on my garage as well, but I do hate leaving the inside door open all the time. This would be awesome.
Nicole
My husband and I both have a set and we have one hidden. However the hidden one is not that reliable since my husband is always locking himself out and then forgetting to put the hidden away. Infact at this moment I think it is on top of his dresser. My brother has one too for real emergency cases, he lives about 10 minutes away. This lock would be a great solution for my husband.
