Have you ever locked two kids in your running car and a third child in the house all at once?
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, my husband and I accidentally did this when we were in the process of building our house. Through a comedy of errors where each of us thought the other had the car and house keys, we found ourselves standing outside of our newly-built home with a 2-year-old and 1-year-old locked in our running SUV, while our 2-month-old infant daughter was locked in her carrier inside the house.
Of course you can imagine the panic that ensued…until one of our new neighbors calmly walked across the street and wedged a credit card into the door frame, popping the lock. Of course I vowed two things right then and there: a) to always use the deadbolt lock and b) we needed to ensure that we were always able to gain access to the house.
Until now we’ve used a PIN pad attached to our garage door to achieve this, leaving our door leading inside in the garage unlocked. Of course had I known that there were such things as the Kwikset SmartKey available before now, we could have solved this in a much simpler and more secure manner!
My husband installed the Kwikset Arlington Handle and SmartKey Keyless Deadbolt in under 20 minutes — all while I was away on a business trip and he was in charge of all five kids. So that tells you just how easy it is!
The handle is so much more attractive than the boring basic doorknob we had previously, and I love the keyless deadbolt. It automatically locks behind you after 30 seconds, and all you have to do to get back in is punch a 4-digit code that you set into the PIN pad. We’re definitely buying a second SmartKey for our door in the garage!
One Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a Kwikset SmartKey prize pack that includes:
- Your choice of a Arlington handleset, Tustin lever or Juno knob
- SmartCode Signature Series Keyless Deadbolt

Just had to leave a quick comment even though the contest is over. This brought a smile to my face. We have monkeys for kids and usually have a second story window unlocked.

I carry a key on my keyring like most people, but we also have a hide a key. I’m not a huge fan of the hide a key, but it has proven useful. One tip, put your hide a key in the backyard rather on the front porch. That way if you have to use it random people are less likely to see you taking it out of the hiding place.
I don’t know what we will do when the kids get older and should have a key. I’ve considered the keypad for the garage door, but this lock system would solve that problem!

I double and triple check and I too have had a few close calls and even needed to send my daughter climpbing into a window last week to open the front door because I walked right past the keys hanging on their knob…

My mom has an extra copy of our key, and we also have a garage door code. I have never seen this type of lock before. I would love to have one!

Between my teenager and hubby we have gone through our share of lost keys. Earlier this yr. my hubby installed agarage door coder so problem solved. However having this would be great so our garage door lasts longer.

I currently have three sets of car keys, and at the moment, cannot find even one set. We use a garage door code system to get in and out of the house. As for house keys, I could not even tell you where one key is located. I would love to win this! We have two little ones, and they have figured out how to lock us out of the house. If I had this, that would never happen again! What a relief that would be!

I bought a car last year that has a code you can punch in to unlock it. It has saved me so many times. Now, I just have to make my husband memorize the code.

the best way I found to keep my keys organized is w/ a carabiner. I can take off car keys or house keys easy that way.

I always have a set in my purse. My husband and I almost never use the front door, we use the garage. Our oldest one does when he leaves for school and sometimes the door is probably not locked!! I have a 1 & 2 yr old and would love something more secure, yet easily accessable! This would be fabulous to win! Thanks
