Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!
Did you know that September is National College Savings Month? What better time to start saving to give your kids a little extra help in obtaining a college education!
I had the opportunity to learn about the CollegeAdvantage 529 Savings Plan at the Ohio State Fair last month, and I was really inspired to start a savings plan for our kids. I’ve always been adamant that I’d like for our children to have some responsibility in paying for their education so that they don’t take it for granted, but I’d definitely like to be able to assist them in their efforts, so this seems like a fantastic option for us.
Features of the CollegeAdvantage 529 Savings Plan include:
- Earnings are tax-free.
- Deduct contributions from Ohio taxable income ($2,000 annually).
- Use your funds at any college in the country.
- Pay for tuition, room and board, or books.
- Contribute as little as $25 at a time.
- Benefit from professional money management by leading financial firms.
- Save with FDIC-insured bank products.
- Pay no enrollment fee, no maintenance fee and low administrative fees.
- Transfer funds to another child.
- Withdraw funds at any time.
- Change investment options.
Those are some pretty compelling reasons to open a 529 savings plan if you ask me.

my daughter is only 3 weeks old, so no, but we are thinking of starting one for her in January.
Kimberly
do it as soon as you have the Social Security number – only requires a $25 investment to start and you start gaining interest as soon as it’s open! That $25 could be $30, or more, by January and you would have missed out on the savings!!!
Kimberly
Absolutley! As a young mom, I’m currently working on my MBA and definitely find huge value in the 529. I’ve started saving for me and then continue the savings to my children (3 and 1). Being able to have multiple accounts for the children, mom/dad/grandma/grandpa – it’s important to maximize the investment! Link to the UPromise account to increase the savings as well! Great to have, spread the word – thanks DSM!!!

Our daughter is 2 and we have started saving for college tuition already. Hoping to have around 50,000 in her account by the time she is 18. More if it’s possible, but that’s our goal for now.
