For my especially reluctant readers, I've found it helps to give them one character to be responsible for reading out loud (usually the funniest or the main character), while I read the other character's parts. They like doing funny voices and it really gets them into the story!

If you want some motivation for your kids, try for every hour of reading time they get an hour of tv or video game. Or modify it so that it works for you.

Last night we challenged our boys to a reading challenge over the summer & I am going to join them!
This would really help us with our reading.. They just finished there first yr in high school and really want to help them be ready for next year!! we also have a 3yr old that LOVES to read and as she learns we need more advanced books!!

My kids are competitive, like most kids. So I set up a challenge between them. I read to them a little bit before bed each night, so the challenge goes something like this.
THey keep track of the books they are reading on a chart on the refrigerator. WHen it comes time to pick a new book to read at night, it is usually about once a month, we go to the book store and pick out a new book together. The trick is, whoever has more books read on the current fridge list, gets the final say in the book chosen. It is amazing how much more they read as the bed time book begins to come to an end.

No trick is needed. Just turn off the tv, or video games, and tell them it's reading time. If they don't want to read, they must sit in silence. A book suddenly becomes inviting.

Get lots of interesting books from the library and have a time when all family members read (including mom and dad). In addition read books to your children that they cannot read for themselves and discuss them.
