Join me every week for Win-It Wednesday. I’ll be posting 24-hour giveaways at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET to give you plenty of chances to win!
As schools let out for summer, Borders is Double Dog Daring you with their Summer Reading Challenge. Getting kids to do anything that isn’t on a bike, in a pool or in front of the TV during summer break can sometimes be a daunting task, yet continued reading is important for their minds to continue to grow and bend. Have your child under 12 years old sign up for the challenge at the Borders store nearest you. All they have to do is read any 10 books this summer and they’ll receive a FREE book!
HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot, have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read:
“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”
One lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader will win a $100 Borders Gift Card!
To enter, tell me one way you get your kids to read over the summer. What tips and tricks can you share that have them turning off the TV and opening a book?
Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, three, or four for up to a total of 4 entries!!!

We go to the library more often, and sometimes bookstores, so keep getting new and interesting books

My oldest daughter loves to read, so there is no motivation necessary ! She really enjoys reading to her baby sis at bedtime!

I have a preschooler, so a bit different, but we just keep getting out new books, lots from the library, we let her take out whatever she can find and it is great to keep her interested!
Angie
We joined two reading programs. One at the Library and one at a bookstore. The program comes with a tracking paper so it helps us keep track of our reading and it also motivates us to get the time in for fun prizes….like free books.

I make books readily available (making sure there are always new ones) and make a routine of reading time everyday.

My 2 1/2 year old LOVES to read…right now his favorite book is “Dinosaurs Love Underpants.” Almost every time we got to a book store we spend far more on him than ourselves :)

I dont have kids yet, but when I used to nanny I would take the kids to the library at least once a week to pick out books and read there.

My son will be 3 next month and he loves for us to read to him or make up stories. I am hoping he continues his love of books when he goes to school. I wonder though, since I’m not there yet, if older kids wouldn’t rather have someone read them the story. I remember when I was young my mother would make me go to my room and read and I just wanted to fall asleep. If my son outgrows his love of books I think I will try that, or have him “make up” a story to tell me.

Keeping kids surrounded by books keeps them interested in them.

I let my kids pick out the books that they want to read- it makes it easier for them to read if it is something they are interested in.

I follow via google reader.

I take them to both local libraries and let them pick what they want to read! (within reason, of course!).

Well, my son is only 2, so I don’t really have to work to get him to read. It’s more about me remembering that reading isn’t just for nap and bedtime. Usually first thing in the morning is a good time, because he’s pretty mellow.

Rainy day reading!! Or set a time each day that the family get together in one room and read individually.
Shelley
I don’t really have to convince my toddler to read…she loves to do it already! I keep baskets of her books around so she can easily choose what she wants to read.
Marty
They don’t get to watch tv during the day at all. We homeschool so I tell them if they’re bored I’ll find something for them to do (chores, schoolwork). Plus we go to the library at least once a week.

My daughter loves to read books, and is signed up for a summer program through our local library, the incentive there is a party & a free book.
