Stop the presses! Walgreens has finally posted their official coupon policy on their website. You will definitely want to print it out and keep a copy of it with you when you shop.
I know that many people have expressed frustration with the stores’ inconsistency so this should help alleviate some of your frustration.
Here are some highlights:
- When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased. Previously, most stores only accepted one coupon because one item rang up as free.
- The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value). This should prevent stores from refusing your coupons in this situation. I know this has been particularly frustrating for many people.
- Walgreens accepts valid internet/print-at-home coupons.
The policy also explains Register Rewards and the rules for redeeming them as well.

I know this is pathetic; but you just made my night and I am so excited! :)

I don’t think it’s pathetic at all — we’ve been waiting a long time for this!

If you get a raincheck for an item at Walgreen will they also give you the register reward the week after it was in the sales ad?
Tara Kuczykowski
Based on this statement, I’d have to say no, Nana. :(

Then they need to make sure they had enough of the items in stock. I get tired of going into my store for something that is on sale and there are none left.

This policy was SUPPOSED to clear things up, but WAGs customer relations for my region (southwest VA) still says store managers have discretion to reject coupons that exceed the sales price instead of adjusting them down. Maybe this will work itself out after a while…has anybody else run into this since the policy came out?
Shelly T.
I really don’t understand WHY a manager wants to reject a coupon. The store is losing money when they do not take the coupon and the customer walks away. Often times it is only a penny difference. I just don’t understand their thinking!!

This would apply to ANY store. The more a store wants to refuse coupons or “harass” the customers trying to use valid coupons, the more likely the customer will just say forget it and walk out, taking their business elsewhere. It’s a pain at times trying to use some valid Internet coupons and some stores around here don’t take them (or don’t take ones for free or B1G1) because of the *bleeping bleeps* that have made fakes. I do appreciate the stores that have the policy online where we can find & print it out and can refer to it. :)

Yep, same here. Mine will no longer count the monthly coupon books as “Walgreens coupons”…they say they’re “manufacturer’s coupons” and won’t let me combine a “manufacturer’s coupon” with it…when they CLEARLY have a big “W” right on the coupons! So frustrating! Every time I go in, there’s a “new rule”.

I was hoping there would also be something in the policy that clearly stated that you can use both a Walgreen’s In Ad coupon along with a Walgreens Monthly Coupon Booklet Q. Maybe I missed seeing it? This was a recent problem for me a few weeks ago when the cashier said they were the same coupon and I couldn’t do it. Boo Hoo!

Kathy, you should be okay according to the first bullet under “Multiple Coupons” in the official policy (link at the top of the post) :)

I WISH WISH WISH I could get a CUT AND DRY CLEAR answer to this question…yet even when I talked to the live chat gal on Walgreens site, she clearly wasn’t “in the know”. My question being..”Are the monthly coupon books considered WALGREENS coupons or MANUFACTURERS coupons?”
They used to be Walgreens coupons and I always combined manufacturers coupons with them. The last two times I went in they wouldn’t let me and said they’re considered manufacturers coupons! Argh! Make up your mind Walgreens! I just WISH stores all had a CORPORATE policy that ALL stores had to stick with. I get so tired of “managers discretion”. Ugh!

the problem I have with the new policy is that Walgreens will get paid the full amount of the coupon from the manufacturer….. why are we still getting jipped?
Angie
I am glad there is finally a policy. I have so many issue when I go to Walgreens. Some more than others. I find that if I return a product with a coupon on the receipt even though it wasn’t for the item I was returning, the stores try to deduct the amount from the return. In fact I had a store trying to deduct a 5.00 coupon off a product I purchased for 1.99. Really how does that work. If I find that we won’t use a product I used a coupon on then we will donate it. I have noticed that with most coupons there is a way to tell which coupon was used on which product, which I will usually point out to a manger if the customer service department gives me a hard time on a non coupon used return. With Walgreens sometimes they do give me a hard time if the coupon beeps. They will never mark down the price on the coupon. Now at least they have it in writing. If I do have problems I will call corp right there. As far as the money maker portion I don’t think that we should be getting additional money back if we haven’t paid the other amount on the product. I guess there can be a big difference of opinion. I am just thankful to have the coupons that I don’t want to push my luck and have the manufactuers take them away. However some stores work that way, and I am not complaining about it, but I am not going to complain when I don’t get it.
Thanks again for this wonderful site.
