I love getting free stuff as much as anyone, but I am concerned with the number of people who get a lot of these trial size products simply because they’re free because of the amount of packaging that comes with each little packet. The plastic wrap can’t be recycled and buying a larger container is such a better use of the petroleum needed to make all this plastic.
Karen
I agree completely with Nicole. Not only is it not good for our environment (most importantly), it also helps to prejudice stores against our use of coupons when people use them on small travel-size products, especially when people do so in bulk. I believe coupons should be used responsibly and not just to “score as much free stuff as possible.”
Tara Kuczykowski
I’m certainly not advocating irresponsible use of coupons and scoring as much free stuff as possible. Using coupons on travel size items is completely legit when it’s within the terms of the coupon, and with many people taking vacations this time of year, it’s nice to be able to save on these items.

When I went in last week to my target w/ coupons for deodorant my target WOULD NOT let me buy sample size, even thougth the coupon had no size limit. They have somehow rigged there registars to id these products. When I asked about it I was told that they are cracking down and watching, it someone tries to buy more than what a family of 5 would buy, they will decline the sale. I don’t know if this is legal or supported by the corporation. It was really frustrating for me because I drove 30 miles to buy products to donate! I don’t think I’ll go out of my way any more to shop Target and will just shop my really local stores. i am disappointed!

Travel sizes are perfect for (as you stated) travel and also for not bulking up my gym bag. I usually refill my small travel size bottles with my regular size shampoo and conditioner, but like to toss in the recycle bin and replace once a month or so. Offers like these allow me to do that frugally.
Thanks for posting, Tara!

Nicole, thanks for posting… I have often thought the exact same thing. Good to hear others are thinking and acting in “green” ways, too.
Karen
Definitely on the same page as Gwen–love buying the travel size and refilling for the gym and travel. Thanks for posting, Tara!!!

There is nothing wrong with buying trial sized items – if you are going to use them!
janet
I personally like trial sizes b/c many family members have sensitivities to different products and there’s nothing more frustrating than buying products and finding out you can’t use them. Especially soaps and detergents! Perfect way to try before you buy!! Thanks Tara!

i think getting travel size items for free is awesome, especially when it comes around for the holidays because in our xmas stockings we always put travel size hygeine products in there, i dont know why, thats just how its always been! and as for the ‘green’ concern imo the companies will always be making them and always be packaging them that way, maybe if you let your voice be heard to the companies theyll do something to change it! otherwise it will remain the same, you can ‘do your part’ as to not buying them but other people still will!
Tisha
If we are using the coupon as stated why should we not stock up on items if we have paid for the newspaper? Why does saving money lead to “going green”? Nicole we have no control over packaging. I, like Janet have sensitive skin and have given away many items.Your concern should be directed to the big company’s not the consumers.
I do my part when it comes to recycling. I would also like to save money like I help save the environment. The company not only puts out these products of this size, but also the coupons we are using!!!! Right

These travel items are great, I pull them out when we go camping its a great space saver or when we have company. We also use them for stockings. They are also great to have on hand if you run out of something and have to make it through until payday.
Tina
I get them and donate to shelters, have you ever tried a load of all your personal needs in full size? ( some that’s 30lbs easy with make-up) I agree ask the companies to change. Tell the company with a letter, not a complaint to a cashier over it, either. Find the service number and report the thoughts. Get your friends to do it and change will happen for more green practices. Just look at what the vegans have done for the animals.
