I recently made a return to a national retailer for a purchase I made using a 5.00 coupon. The retailer refunded the price of the item less the coupon amount. I had no objection to this as I did not want the item, nor did I wish to replace it. After returning home I realized I had not received a full refund as the store did not refund the sales tax I paid on the full purchase price. eg. 10.00 item paid for with cash and 5.00 coupon, total paid was 5.80 (tax computed on 10.00 original value) the return netted me 5.40 as the coupon amount was deducted but the tax refunded was based on the 5.00 refund! Has anyone else had this problem?

I’ve had the opposite problem. Buy an item with a coupon, return the item and get refunded the full price amount. I guess it’s really not a problem. :)

Yes,Rich,I’ve had this problem many times. No amount of explaining gets through to people.
The only place that I haven’t had trouble is Target. If a coupon is used for a product and it’s returned, the refund has included the coupon amount.

I don’t think I’ve returned anything with a coupon at Target in awhile, so I’m not sure how it’s processed, but the correct procedure is to receive the full refund back, including the amount of the coupon. That coupon has already been processed and will be submitted to the manufacturer for redemption, so Target is making twice the profit off of you by doing this. Of course there are always people out there that take advantage of this, but Target should be able to keep track of repeated returns with coupons in their register system.
