Our family loves to run in the sprinkler, have water balloon fights and then relax with a movie in the air conditioning afterwards!

We go to the beach, or play in the sprinkler at home. My in-laws gave the kids one of those inflatable water slides last year, so that keeps them busy.

The library also has fun (free!) activities all summer long.

And we usually do the dollar movies once a week... when we wake up early enough!

Now that my daughter is a little older, we are going to get a pool. She likes sprinklers and baby pools, but she's afraid of getting hurt.

7 Rosanne June 9, 2009 at 3:16 pm

WE have a bike path in our neighborhood. Walking or riding are free. Pack a lunch and walk down to the park

My family likes to play at the splash park or squirt each other with water guns.

11 Deanna June 9, 2009 at 3:38 pm

My favorite frugal summer activity is lighting the torches in our back yard and inviting some friends over. The kids play, and the parents can sit back and relax.

12 chastidy June 9, 2009 at 3:50 pm

We meet up with friend at our local splash pad and let the kids run around in the water and then have a picnic under the trees. Thanks :)

My son is only 15 months, but our favorite thing to do is go to a big playdate in the park every Wednesday. It doesn't cost anything and he has a blast playing on the playground with the other kids. If any of you live anywhere close to the East Cobb Park in Marietta, GA--you should definitely bring your kids for live music and lots of fun.

We're lucky enough to have a beautiful beach to go to. Just bring sunscreen, a lot of liquids, and non-sticky snacks and you got yourself a day at the beach!

17 carol June 9, 2009 at 4:26 pm

We play in the blow up pool or go next door to swin at the neighbor's house. We make popsicles and slushy drinks and color and go to the park or go for walks. We meet Daddy for lunch for a picnic during the work day.

We enjoy making pops out of different kool aid flavors or making ice cube necklaces, they really cool you off and are SOOO cheap.

20 Dan June 9, 2009 at 5:05 pm

21 kathy pease June 9, 2009 at 5:27 pm

picnics at the lake are always so much fun for us :)

22 Terra Heck June 9, 2009 at 5:28 pm

We go to the library for free programs and activities. We also do free activities and programs at the park. Earlier today we went to the library and learned about creepy, crawly bugs.

Enrolling the kids in the summer reading program at the library is awesome. There's weekly trips to the library, lots of reading, and weekly activities.

26 Esther June 9, 2009 at 6:31 pm

To keep cool in the summer, we've been drinking healthy smoothies almost daily! Just freeze bananas, strawberries, or buy frozen ones from Costco, and add any kind of juice. Add yogurt or more bananas for a smoother texture. Kids think it's a sweet treat! We live in a condo, so we also like to get the water table out to the balcony or write on the ground with the new 3-D sidewalk chalk.

27 Christine V June 9, 2009 at 7:20 pm

30 jennifer Letavish June 9, 2009 at 8:50 pm

I have 4 kids and I they spend a lot of their summer in VBS camps.(Vacation Bible School) They are offered all around my town on varying weeks throughout the summer and they are free! Free summer camp Monday thru Friday from 8-noon! Can't beat that!!

31 Michelle June 9, 2009 at 9:30 pm

We love finding farms that have picking days available. Nothing beats a carton of fresh strawberries on a sunny day!

32 vicky June 9, 2009 at 9:36 pm

We live 10 miles from the beach and go there 3 or 4 times a week. It is always different people there and the kids always have fun

We were also just given a year membership to a wonderful place called brookgreen gardens. the kids love that it has animals, flowers, interactive exibits and it is just fun

I like to take my nephews to the free parks and playgrounds. Also, there are many small municipalities around here that do free family events - if you pay attention to the listings in our paper, there's something at least twice a month that you can do for free in the summer (festivals, picnics, etc).

I have fuound some cheap activities to do for my kids from books. This summer we are making fake geodes, among other things.

44 Tammy June 10, 2009 at 12:58 am

If you can find coupons or get it pre season on a season ticket for a discount for a water park locally it can actually be a very affordable way to spend your summer - we buy our season passes for Monday to Friday admission in December and if we only visit the water park three times in the summer it will pay for the season pass!

I love taking advantage of all the local pools and splash grounds our county has to offer. Most of them are MUCH less than what the bigger water parks charge and the kids still have a blast. We also bring our own food and have a healthy picnic after all the swimming.
