As a I mentioned a few weeks ago, our family spent the last weekend before school started at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio. This was the perfect ultra-fun way to say goodbye to summer while spending some quality time together!
Our short stay was action packed from start to finish, which was fine by me since it meant that the kids crashed in their beds shortly after we returned to our room each night. With so many choices in activities — wave pool, water slides, ropes course, mini-golf and bowling, arcade, you name it — we could have easily spent a week or more there and never gotten bored.
We had the opportunity to enjoy both the indoor and outdoor water parks while we were there, and I was pleased to see that they keep both areas clean and organized and well-stocked with dry towels.
However, I do want to mention that the resort requires that all children under 48″ in height wear a life jacket at all times, even in the splash parks. I must say that we found this rule to be a bit over the top as even my 7-year-old barely made the cutoff. Since my kids are all relatively strong swimmers and are used to being allowed free reign at our local community pool, there were a few tantrums and tears shed over this requirement.
That said, the rooms are absolutely gorgeous, with an African theme throughout, and I was especially fond of the gas fireplace we had in our sitting area. I could definitely see spending a few cold winter nights at the resort playing in the warm water and then returning to the room to sip hot cocoa by the fire.
We ate at both of the main restaurants during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed both the breakfast bar at the Great Karoo Marketplace and our dinner at The Reserve. Of course, we also made a trip to the Candy Hut for sweets. Oh my goodness, the salted chocolate-covered caramel that I selected was worth every calorie!
