I've used a TaxSlayer for several years and I recommend them. I think its free the first year, then about $15 if you want to re-use them the following year.

I have used TaxAct for the last five years. It is free to prepare and file the Federal report. If you need to file a state income tax there is a nominal charge. Before using TaxAct I had used an enrolled agent for two years. I found errors both years. Even though you pay to have your taxes done, you should check to see that they are accurate. After all is said and done, you are the one responsible.

If you live in Colorado, you can file your state taxes for free through their Netfile site ( https://www.netfile.state.co.us/file2009/Welcome.jsp2 ). It doesn't walk you through step-by-step, but it does perform calculations for you. Other states may have something similar.

On the columbuslibrary.org website, there is a number I believe 211 that connects you with FirstLink. Any family or single individual with an income under 50,000 will get FREE income tax service or if you did yours and you want a second opinion. But first, you are given appt by FirstLink and it is pretty fast. So go for it. Tax professionals doing your taxes for free. Not many people are using this service.

I've been using Turbo Tax for the past couple of years; it's a great software but a little expensive. I recommend people to go on the IRS website, as it offers a list of companies that offer tax preparation and e-file for free (If you meet the requirements to qualify). I just did my taxes yesterday using Tax Act. It's FREE to prepare and free to e-file for everyone. I also did my taxes using Turbo Tax online software just to compare and both softwares gave me the same refund. BUT Tax Act it's free! So i save $30. However, if you still prefer to use Turbo Tax, I recommend the online version. If you are a BANK OF AMERICA customer search for a link that gives you a 35% discount (I saw this promotion a couple of weeks a ago). My sister uses Turbo Tax business edition and she goes through WICHOVIA website and gets a 25% off. I hope this helps some of you. Best wishes.
