When I was a Girl Scout we learned to leave a place better than we found it. My grandmother taught me to be content with less...(this one has taken a while to put into practice) and she shared her love of gardening and outdoors with me. She was a homeschool grandma without knowing it! She talked to me as though I was a grownup too, and showed me how to reuse and make do with what you have. My mom taught me the coupon basics and also how to shop the sales. With seven kids, that comes in handy. She also saw the value in hand-me-downs and fixing/altering something to make something new! It is interesting to me how all of these life lessons are timeless and yet cool.

My best green tip is to use less water. I turn off the water when I brush my teeth and I only shower as long as I need to. I mean who really needs to shower for 25 minutes? Thanks!!

The most important thing we can do is to teach our children the importance of recycling and using our resources wisely. If we can raise the next generation to really respect the earth, we will be doing so much to save the resources we have. And of course, the best way to teach children is by example!

Use envelopes and the back sides of paper from your bills & junk mail to make shopping lists or for art projects. Sign up to receive e-bills whenever possible and remove yourself from all junk mail lists to reduce the amount of paper coming into your home.

My green tip is to think ahead and take cold water with you everywhere! We live in Arizona and it is always hot and super tempting to buy a bottled water....so always have your own cold beverage with you!

15 Tiffany April 22, 2009 at 8:53 am

Recycle. :)

Just stop buying things like paper towels, plastic baggies, etc. You'll learn to live without them and save money and trash in the process!

My husband is a cartographer. He brings home huge maps that are no longer needed. We flip them over and the kids use them to make murals. They love it, and it gives the paper another purpose before recycling.

I am a recycling freak. I always have a plastic bag handy in case I find something that needs or can be recycled and I take it home with me to put it in my recycling bins.

25 Lisa April 22, 2009 at 9:21 am

Drink water from a pitcher and if you are on the go use a refillable water bottle. And keep in mind that it does take some time to get used to not being so disposable. It's a whole different mindset!

26 Pilar April 22, 2009 at 9:21 am

Pick up the freebies reusable bags today! I just started using mine and not only is it good for the environment (yea!) it also reduces the clutter of plastic bags in our house.

28 Elizabeth April 22, 2009 at 9:25 am

Use your reusable shopping bags!!!

29 Mary April 22, 2009 at 9:25 am

I use CFL bulbs in all lights and wash clothes only in cold water, use cloth bags, rags-versus paper towels.

30 Julie C. April 22, 2009 at 9:25 am

My tip is to recycle paper by printing on the back of already used paper (expired sheets of IP coupons, papers from work, school, flyers, etc.).

31 Kim Stewart April 22, 2009 at 9:27 am

I put a bucket in the shower with me. The water doesn't go down the drain and I can use it to water houseplants or my windowboxes!

32 KellyH April 22, 2009 at 9:32 am

My best earth day and frugal tip is to hang your laundry outside on a clothesline to dry.

35 Anne April 22, 2009 at 9:37 am

My 11 yr old daughter turns off the water between shampoo, conditioner and soap...

36 JW April 22, 2009 at 9:37 am

I try not to accept any bags at stores anymore when I can carry the items myself!

37 Andi April 22, 2009 at 9:38 am

The best that I can do is recycle everything possible. What the city won't take, my husband takes the rest to the recycle place next to his work. It's kind of a pain, but I hate to think of filling the landfill up with things that can recycled.

38 Kate April 22, 2009 at 9:46 am

Give cloth diapers a try! Once you get into the swing of it, it is simple to wash them and not only is it green, it's MUCH cheaper!
Thanks for the giveaway!

We use reusable water bottles and also we have a water delivery service that picks up 5 gallon jugs and reuses them. It costs the less than buying bottle water but it also uses very little plastic.

Growing up I always hated when my mom and grandma saved and reused butter dishes and cool whip containers. It seemed they were being cheap, rather than frugal in my eyes. Now that I'm older I see how much potential there is for every container I bring home from the store. You can reuse just about everything after a good wash - as long as you have the cabinet space :P

For those of you that have lots of house plants try catching the rain water in a barrel or bucket and keep for watering your plants. Use cloth napkins instead of throwing away papertowels. Reuse old teeshirts and towels for cleaning cloths.
