by Tara Kuczykowski on May 9, 2009 · 1,083 comments

vaporubDid you know that kids can catch six to ten colds year-round?

I've never kept track, but that sounds about right. I don't think there was a single week this past winter when at least one of the kids was feeling under the weather.

Vicks would like to provide one very lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader with a little extra comfort for both mom and child. They've put together a “Vicks VapoRub Comfort Care” gift basket valued at $450 filled with Vicks VapoRub along with some other favorite items to make children more comfortable. The basket includes a plush Little Giraffe blanket, classic children’s books and lullaby CDs. And don’t think they forgot about Mom, especially with Mother’s Day a few days away! They're also including a 100% cashmere wrap, some favorite soothing skincare items from L’Occitane and a manicure/pedicure kit.

For child:

  • Vicks VapoRub
  • Chenille Blanket
  • Soothing lullaby music
  • Assortment of children’s books: Corduroy, Harold and the Purple Crayon, The Giving Tree, The Little Prince

For mom:

  • Nordstrom Cashmere Sweater Knit Wrap
  • L’Occitane Shea La Vie Gift Set and Hand Cream
  • Sephora Professional Manicure/Pedicure Nail Kit
  • Essie Spa Pedicure Mini Kit

Want to win a this fabulous Vicks VapoRub Prize Package?

Of course you do – I wish I could win myself! Just tell me about your favorite way to comfort yourself or your child when a nasty cold infiltrates your family. Do you have a special remedy that's been passed from generation to generation? Maybe you make a big batch of chicken noodle soup like me.

It is rare for us to get sick but if it happens we drink hot tea and rub vicks under our noses.

3 Lauren May 9, 2009 at 8:16 pm

I use medication to help bring fevers down along with a cool washcloth on my or my sons forehead. My husband also takes care of either me or my son when we're sick. I'll change the sheets on my sons bed when he's sick. Nothing like fresh sheets to snuggle down in to help make you feel better!

4 Donna E May 9, 2009 at 8:17 pm

We use alot of vicks around here. I love the product. One of the best tricks I have learned is appling it to the soles of your feet and wearing cotton socks that night, it stops coughing. Or using it as a poltice (apply salve to chest and put a warm rag on it) and let it stay. I belong to the forum just not very long. I enjoy seeing what's there.

Maybe I'm weak, but my favorite remedy is just to kick up my feet and sleep on the couch!

I just turn the vaporizer on and cuddle with my kiddoes under a warm blanket:-)

9 Melissa May 9, 2009 at 8:21 pm

My kiddos are 5 and 1, and when my 5-year-old is sick, he gets to watch tons of tv with his special blanket and read lots of books with me. For both kids, we love baths, soup, fever meds, and Vicks Vaporub. I actually just put it on my 1-year-old tonight before bed! I would love to win this!

Whenever the little ones are feeling stuffy, I take them in the bathroom, shut the door and turn on a hot shower. We sit on the floor and I read to them until they start to feel at least a little refreshed!

11 Marina May 9, 2009 at 8:24 pm

When my kiddo is sick I let him watch his favorite movie on the portable dvd player in his bedroom. He loves staying in his comfy bed when he's not feeling his best.

12 Jill L May 9, 2009 at 8:26 pm

When my kids are sick, I pull out the bed in the family room and get them all comfy. I make sure they get lots of mom attention during the day and I keep them company while they watch their favorite shows.

13 Michele May 9, 2009 at 8:28 pm

I always make homemade chicken soup with lots of garlic, pepper and big egg noodles. We do put vicks on their backs and chests at night so they can sleep well.

14 Heather A May 9, 2009 at 8:29 pm

We have a little min metal teapot handed down in the family. It is great for coaxing one to drink fluids and only comes out during major illness.

We make a nest for the boys on the couch with lots of blankets and pillows. Then we snuggle up and watch cartoons, the Price is Right and doze off and on.

17 Kat May 9, 2009 at 8:31 pm

With my kiddos we snuggle and watch movies or read books.

18 Karil Whetstone May 9, 2009 at 8:31 pm

We watch our *comfort* movies--ones that we've seen many many times but that always make us feel good--for instance, Love, Actually.

22 Deanna Whetten May 9, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I think we just lay around, watch movies and turn on the humidifier. Some of my kids need breathing treatments when they're sick so sadly we do a lot of that.

23 Danielle May 9, 2009 at 8:35 pm

When I get sick I like to take a bath with a mint scented bath bomb or bath oil. It clears my sinus' and the hot water relaxes me. I also love to curl up with a good book and stay in my PJs!

after a doctor's appointment, we always stop at Wendy's to get a frosty. My mom did that with me growing up and the tradition still continues!

28 Shannon May 9, 2009 at 8:40 pm

When my little ones are sick, we always do lots of cuddling. For bad night time couching--crackers and water. ;)

29 Karo May 9, 2009 at 8:40 pm

when my little one is sick i put her in my bed all comfy and put a cool wash cloth on her forehead and sing to her till she falls asleep then when she wakes up we talk about what she dreamed about and read books and sing again i try to keep the tv off cause its reay the only time she likes to cuddle and stay in one place so i make it mommy time with her she does enjoy it and feels special cause of all the extra attention she gets, not babysat by the tv

I will put vicks vapor rub on a warm wet hand towel and place it on there chest under their shirt. It really seems to sooth them. I also use those rice warm buddies. You can heat them up in the microwave and put around your neck or anywhere really. I really like them because you can also put the ones I have in the freezer and they are cozy and cold for a good while. I will post a link to the brands website. They are awesome. I get them from my wonderful hometown (not many around) Pharmacy. They are great lifesavers.

Lots of cuddles always help us feel better.

45 Laura M May 9, 2009 at 8:59 pm

I hate it when my kids get colds! The best thing I can do is take both of our minds off of it, usually with Popsicles (in the summer) and hot chocolate (in the winter) complete with many snuggles and movies to keep us distracted!

46 Rachael May 9, 2009 at 9:00 pm

When my DD is sick, we cuddle, turn on the shower, read books, watch Miss Patty Cake and Miss Spider and just enjoy the time with each other.

I let them lay on the couch with blankets and pillows, watch some television, eat popsicles or drink milkshakes, and just give them some extra loving attention. Of course, I give them any appropriate medicinal treatment.
