by Tara Kuczykowski on May 9, 2009 · 1,083 comments

vaporubDid you know that kids can catch six to ten colds year-round?

I've never kept track, but that sounds about right. I don't think there was a single week this past winter when at least one of the kids was feeling under the weather.

Vicks would like to provide one very lucky Deal Seeking Mom reader with a little extra comfort for both mom and child. They've put together a “Vicks VapoRub Comfort Care” gift basket valued at $450 filled with Vicks VapoRub along with some other favorite items to make children more comfortable. The basket includes a plush Little Giraffe blanket, classic children’s books and lullaby CDs. And don’t think they forgot about Mom, especially with Mother’s Day a few days away! They're also including a 100% cashmere wrap, some favorite soothing skincare items from L’Occitane and a manicure/pedicure kit.

For child:

  • Vicks VapoRub
  • Chenille Blanket
  • Soothing lullaby music
  • Assortment of children’s books: Corduroy, Harold and the Purple Crayon, The Giving Tree, The Little Prince

For mom:

  • Nordstrom Cashmere Sweater Knit Wrap
  • L’Occitane Shea La Vie Gift Set and Hand Cream
  • Sephora Professional Manicure/Pedicure Nail Kit
  • Essie Spa Pedicure Mini Kit

Unfortunately my 7 year old is the one who gets sick the most in our house. He is also asthmatic...so comforting him usually requires breathing treatments and lots of rest.

I always keep all the must haves on hand, soup, 7 up, and we have a sick box, full of movies and things to do in bed to help make it through the day....

I comfort myself by drinking tea, petting the cats, and sleeping under a ton of blankets -- constantly!

My grandmother, mother, and now I all use vicks vapor rub to sleep better at night when congested.

When a nasty cold infiltrates my family I immediately kick into high gear with major nurturing and TLC. I have an entire shelf in our linen closet devoted to pampering the common colds and flu! I have 2 steam vaporizers that I put into my children's bedrooms to help them to breathe better and paired with that is old fashioned Vicks Vapor Rub! I immediately make sure my kids have it gently massaged into their little chests and I truly think just my spending my undivided attention with them is half the battle in getting them to feel better. I always read them their favorite stories and make them lots and lots of hot cocoa! I do always offer up chicken noodle soup, sorry not handmade, but they are not too crazy about it, so I don't push that on them. Believe it or not, my son and middle daughter also love to have mint chocolate chip ice cream when they have colds so I always treat them to that too! Thanks so much for the chance to enter!

If the diagnosis is 'minor', then fluids, rest and (homemade) chicken soup is prescribed. If the condition worsens, then add vicks vapor rub (chest and nasal area) and double minor prescription. If at this point condition does not improve - call mom! :)

When a child in my family is sick, I pamper them with lots of stories. When I am sick, I like to hibernate in my bedroom with the remote control. No homemade remedies, but I do like nyquil for myself!

The worst part of a cold is not being able to breathe so when one of us gets a cold I put the humidifier in the room and add Vicks Vaposteam to it. It really helps a lot to get us breathing again so we can get a good nights sleep.

I rub my husband's head and back, and put an ice pack to cool him off, make him drink lots of water, and rub lotion on his feet and legs to increase his circulation, and most important, I let him know I love him. :) s...@h...l.com

34 Brittany May 12, 2009 at 10:51 pm

I take a shower, it automatically makes me feel better!

35 Auriette May 12, 2009 at 11:06 pm

I grew up with my mom rubbing Vick's on my chest when I had a cold. I still rely on it when colds or flu hit my household. I like to wrap an old, somewhat threadbare, t-shirt around my neck after I layer on the Vick's. It keeps the pillows and blankets from getting greasy, and I think the warmth helps the Vick's get absorbed into my skin better. It always seems to help!

We still use my Grandmother's way of dealing with stuffy noses. My Grandmother would have us go into the bathroom and she would run hot water in the sink and cover our heads with a towel and make our very own little sauna. Works everytime.

37 Susan Ledet May 12, 2009 at 11:27 pm

I subscribe.

38 Angela J May 12, 2009 at 11:33 pm

Chicken soup is an old stand by that seems to work.

39 Andi May 12, 2009 at 11:50 pm

What's better than snuggling with mom all wrapped up in a blankie watching a favorite tv show or Disney movie for the 1, 326th time when feeling crummy. That's the special thing I do. And I have a jar of Vick's in the medicine cabinet for chest colds. My mom did it for me and I'm carrying on that tradition. Just the smell comforts me.

Taking in more zinc, echinecea, and vitamin C never hurts. Make sure to keep well hydrated and take medications if the symptoms become too bothersome. Keeping comfortable and alleviating any kind of stress on the body is key.

41 Pamela S May 13, 2009 at 12:18 am

BED!!! Sleeping non stop. Lots of TLC from family members.

oddly enough I had someone tell me about a year ago to put Vicks on the feet at night then put socks on and sleep like that and it would help with chest congestion. We've done that and it has helped!!

42 Dan May 13, 2009 at 12:36 am

Campbell's chicken noodle soup. Always comfots the kids and makes them feel better no matter if its a broken bone or the flu.

43 Gina Hindman May 13, 2009 at 12:40 am

When one of my children are sick, I always make them my famous ( at least, in my household) chicken noodle soup and fresh squeezed orange juice with frozen orange and strawberry slices!

Thanks for the 'great' giveaway offering and good luck to all!
