I've hinted about it for days now, and finally here it is – your chance to win a $500 Walmart gift card!!!
Just in time to make your holidays a little happier, Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer this fabulous contest hosted by the Elevenmoms.
Yep, that's right – each Elevenmom is giving away one $500 gift card on her blog, so you have 20 chances to win! Find details on the Elevenmoms site on how you can enter to win each one. Please note that you may only win once.
So who wants to add $500 to their holiday budget? You didn't really think I was going to make this EASY for you, did you? You're going to have to work a little bit for a prize this big.
In light of the tough economic times, this contest is all about discovering new ways to help each other save money. Yesterday I wrote a post detailing seven easy ways to cut at least $1 from your budget per day in the hopes that it would inspire you to participate in The One Dollar Give. I only just scratched the surface though, and I know that you all have some amazing tips to share as well.
So there you go – holiday-themed or not, I want you to share your best methods for cutting back by at least $1 a day!
Methods of Entry*
Every reader can submit up to three (3) different tips to enter this contest. Choose one each of any combination of method one, two, or three for up to a total of 3 entries!!!
YOU MUST LEAVE A TIP WITH EACH ENTRY. ENTRIES THAT DO NOT FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES BELOW WILL BE DELETED.
1. Leave a comment sharing your best money-saving tip to cut at least $1 a day out of your budget!
2. Subscribe to my feed via RSS or email and leave a separate comment letting me know you have done so along with another money-saving tip. If you’re already a subscriber, simply leave a separate comment letting me know you’re already subscribed along with another money-saving tip. Lovin’ my subscribers! You guys make this all possible.
3. Spread the word about this contest in some manner and come back and leave a link in a separate comment along with another money-saving tip. If you have a blog, you can blog about it. But if you don’t have a blog, you’re not at a disadvantage. You could review and Stumble it. You could Twitter it. You could post about it in a forum. Use your imagination!
*Please read the rules for entering and the timeline information carefully as this contest differs from the usual giveaways that I host.
It is important that you leave a separate comment for each type of entry because each comment is equal to one entry. Sorry to harp on this, but it really is that important to tally and select the winner easily, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me simplify the process!
Prize:
1 $500 Walmart Gift Card
This giveaway ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, December 15th. The judges will select ten of their favorite entries to be highlighted on Deal Seeking Mom, and I’ll use Random.org to select the winning comment. The winner will be posted on Tuesday, December 16th, and the prize will be mailed out on December 17th. Good luck!
While you’re in a contest entering mood, don’t forget to check out the Giveaway Gathering for a variety of contests being hosted on Deal Seeking Mom readers’ blogs!

#3 entry - I sent out an email to my mom's group members!
My neighbors that don't use their coupon inserts are kind enough to give them to me - I mentioned to 1 neighbor that I can always use extra coupons and she not only saves me her insert but she got several other neighbors to stop throwing theirs away and pass them on.
For products I don't use, I swap coupons with mom's group members, friends, and family so we all end up with the coupons we are most likely to use.
And I never use a coupon just to use one - I always make sure it's getting the best deal.
Last month I slacked and didn't take full advantage, but I still redeemed over $65 worth of coupons.
Our thermostat was seriously old (say mid 70's) We replaced it with a new one (not totally programable) but we saved $100 that first month which paid for the thermostat and installation. So now every months savings are gravy.
I emailed my sister about your contest
my Third tip is we run space heaters and turn the thermostat way down low...

We cook up sausage and biscuits every Sunday for the next week. That way my husband can heat up a sausage biscuit on his way to work. It saves on time and money since he's not picking something up!
I like to save by making homemade foods such as breads, candies, sauces, etc...
Get your pantry organized so you don't inadvertently buy things that you already have hiding in the pantry with their expiration date looming ahead.

This year we decided to use our fireplace as our main source of heat to cut back on gas consumption. Our fireplace has a blower on it and we set up a fan to move the heat down the hall to the bedrooms. So far it is working great! I can't wait to see how it's going to save us!

iI followed you on twitter and told about the giveaway.
I just subscribed.
This August (or was it Sept) I found a pear tree that had been abandoned. I harvested it three times and made batches of pear jelly. It only cost me for the jars the first round and pectin (which was on clearance for $0.10) Now that's the only jelly my 4 yo wants on her PBJ.

I put a large bath towel in the dryer when I dry clothes, they dry faster and we use less energy, saving us $1 or more a day.

Another money saving tip is to buy all your holiday decorations a few days after the holiday when they are 75%- 90% off, and store them for next year.

I "Stumbled" your blog.
Resolve not to buy anything without first 'doing your homework' via internet and store circulars.
I've recently begun to get more aggressive about coupon-clipping - I'm getting an average of $8 savings each grocery trip, since Giant Eagle doubles coupons. I'm also careful to only use coupons for things that I'd be buying anyway.

I work outside the home, so everynight when I make dinner I try to make enough for my lunch the next day, that probably saves me atleast $5 or $6 a day!!!

My tip: Buy things after the season is over. I bought summer toys for my kids for next summer for pennies each.

When you go out to eat, drink water. it saves between 1.00-3.00 per meal, if your whole family does it could be 10.00+ per meal.

Comment (#1):
I volunteer time for charity instead of just writing a check. An hour here or there is appreciated, the charity gets the value of my services (I'm an attorney, among other skills), and I feel connected - without spending extra money or feeling guilty for not being charitable.

My first money saving tip is to use those Sunday papers for cleaning windows instead of paper towels, works like a charm and doesn't leave streaks.

Another money saving tip is to turn down the ac/heat while away at work, etc. Shop thrift stores for good quality gently used clothes, toys, housewares, etc. And instead of buying the already made expensive pre-packaged foods in the store I make most of my own from scratch. Not only do you get good family time, but makes more, tastes better and saves $.
